Grey’s Anatomy” Plot Twist She Hated: “Meredith Would Never Do That!

Ellen Pompeo knows Meredith Grey doesn’t play by the rules.

She was shocked by a recent plot development on “Grey’s Anatomy” where her character, Dr. Evynn Moore, played by Lena Waithe, was involved in manipulating the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) system, which she found disturbing.

In the March episode, I found myself in a tricky situation as Evynn, where I had to deceive Meredith – a dedicated Alzheimer’s cure researcher for numerous seasons – about my wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis to secure a life-saving kidney transplant. However, Pompeo wasn’t swayed by Meredith’s subsequent actions.

In a conversation with Variety, as shared in their April 29 article, Pompeo expressed that the fictional Meredith Grey he developed would have said something like, “I’m angry you lied, but let’s find ways to manipulate the rules to get you this liver,” emphasizing her frustration with the system. “The system is flawed,” she might have added.

Ultimately, Waithe managed to persuade Pompeo into proceeding with the episode by suggesting that Meredith might have felt obligated to inform UNOS since her current romantic interest, Dr. Nick Marsh (played by Scott Speedman), is a transplant surgeon.

However, upon reconsideration, Pompeo remained uncertain about the authenticity of her character’s decision.

Meredith has been working around the rules for two decades to do what’s morally correct, her explanation goes. She provides free surgeries whenever necessary, always with the aim of healing and aiding people effectively.

Meredith Gray, on numerous occasions, has risked her medical license out of concern for those near and dear to her, including patients. In the sixteenth season alone, she found herself embroiled in a legal dispute, accused of insurance fraud, all in an attempt to aid a young girl battling cancer.

Love plays no role in this situation either. During season seven, Meredith deliberately undermines Derek Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey) Alzheimer’s study so that Dr. Richard Webber’s wife gets the medication for her neurodegenerative disease instead of a placebo.

Additionally, Pompeo acknowledged experiencing an emotional reaction upon discovering her character’s latest storyline development. However, she feels it is her responsibility to uphold and protect the character that she and Shonda Rhimes, who ceased her role as showrunner for ABC’s series in 2015, had tirelessly crafted together.

In simpler terms, Pompeo stated that his role is to maintain Shonda Rhimes’ impressive legacy in top shape. He emphasized that if one stops being dedicated, sloppy, or complacent, then we are not truly fulfilling the purpose for which we are being compensated.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but express my gratitude to Pompeo and the brilliant team responsible for creating Grey’s Anatomy. Far from being lackluster, this series continually pushes boundaries and leaves me on the edge of my seat. Dive in as we revisit the show’s most jaw-dropping moments!

New surgical intern Meredith Grey (portrayed by Ellen Pompeo) experienced quite a shock in the debut episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” when she discovered that the handsome man she had slept with at the bar, who was in fact her new superior, Dr. Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey, was her boss, a well-respected surgeon. Whoops!

In the season one finale, fans were equally astounded as poor Meredith when Addison Montgomery, played by Kate Walsh, unexpectedly appeared at Seattle Grace, walking straight up to Mer and Derek, casually introducing herself with the now famous line, “It seems you’re the woman who’s been sharing my husband.

During its second season, the popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy was placed in a prime post-Super Bowl slot. Viewers held their breath as Meredith made the risky move of inserting her hand into a body cavity housing a live bomb to prevent it from exploding. Even when bomb squad chief Dylan (guest star Kyle Chandler) started walking away with the defused explosive, we thought we could relax. But alas, it detonated, causing tragic consequences for poor Dylan.

Spectators observed as Izzie (Katherine Heigl) found herself captivated by Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a man who exuded charm without trying, during the latter part of season two while he waited for a heart transplant. She became just as smitten as many viewers were. However, when her daring scheme to sabotage his LVAD wire in an attempt to move him up the transplant list backfired catastrophically, leading to his demise in the season finale, it became clear that Grey’s Anatomy was not going to provide us with the fairytale endings we had hoped for.

In the significant ferry mishap during season three, what left a greater impression – Meredith’s near-drowning after being pushed into frigid waters at the scene, or her subsequent confession that she had stopped trying to save herself?

Towards the close of season three, a new surgical intern named Lexie (played by Chyler Leigh) joined Seattle Grace Hospital. She crossed paths with Derek the evening before her first day at work, an encounter reminiscent of his meeting with Mer two seasons back, but without the subsequent sleepover. In the intern’s locker room, she was introduced to George O’Malley (portrayed by T.R. Knight). Interestingly enough, her last name was Grey, making her Meredith’s younger half-sister, one of Thatcher and Susan’s two daughters who were raised together. And thus, a key character was added to the storyline.

As a devoted fan, nearly three seasons had passed since the demise of Denny, but in an unexpected twist, it seemed as if he’d returned – or rather, his spirit was engaging in intimate moments with Izzie. In one of the most preposterous scenes ever to grace the show, the ghostly apparition of Denny served a purpose: to hint to both viewers and Izzie that all was not well. What ultimately unfolded was the revelation of stage IV metastatic melanoma, a cancer that had infiltrated various parts of her body, including her brain.

Instead of assuming Izzie would meet her end in the season five finale, George’s mysterious disappearance should have hinted at trouble for character O’Malley. When Meredith finally deciphered the John Doe’s message scribbled on a hand007, his harsh moniker from earlier seasonsshe attempted to warn the operating team, but it was too late. He flatlined and passed away.

Categorize this event as: The Troubling Incident in the Chronicles of Grey’s. In the final episode of season six, following the hospital’s merger with Mercy West, a despairing husband of a deceased patient, armed and bereft of hope, entered the premises. Tragically, several doctors were killed, many more injured. A chilling scene of Bailey (Chandra Wilson) being dragged by her feet from under a patient’s bed remains etched in our memories. Fortunately, she lived to tell the tale. Unfortunately, Mer and Derek’s baby did not survive. Believing him dead, she endured a harrowing miscarriage due to the trauma.

Two years following a tragic hospital shooting incident, Shonda Rhimes felt it was appropriate to put a group of doctors through another harrowing ordeal. In the final episode of the eighth season, a plane transporting Meredith, Derek, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Lexie, Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) and Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) en route to Boise, Idaho for a surgery on conjoined twins, crashed in the wilderness. This left them stranded, injured, with no one back home aware they’d been involved in an accident. The crash resulted in the deaths of Mark and Lexie, the loss of Arizona’s leg, and Derek’s hand sustaining severe injuries that almost proved permanent.

In a poignant move during the finale of season 10, Grey’s Anatomy bid farewell to Cristina Yang, played by Sandra Oh. Instead of a conventional exit, they brought back Derek “Preston Burke” Shepherd (played by Isaiah Washington), who had left her at the altar in season three. His return with an offer for his hospital in Switzerland was unexpected and emotional. It’s worth noting that Washington’s comeback was surprising, considering his controversial departure from the show, which included him using a derogatory term towards co-star T.R. Knight.

In the season 10 finale, Cristina bid farewell, making room for Dr. Maggie Pierce, her replacement as head of cardio-thoracic surgery. And in the last scene, it was revealed that Dr. Ellis Grey had a daughter, a fact that left Richard (James Pickens Jr.) and many viewers stunned, as they discovered that Mer had another sister, played by Kelly McCreary.

It took everyone by surprise when, with only a few episodes remaining in season 11, the character Derek met a tragic end following a head-on collision after helping a family involved in a car crash. The news of Patrick Dempsey‘s departure was shocking since he had just renewed his contract for the show. The writers may have felt they needed to write off the character without undermining an 11-year romantic storyline, but it didn’t make the pain any less.

In the ninth episode of season 12, Mer (Ellen Pompeo) endured a horrific ordeal when she was viciously assaulted by a patient. The attack left her jaw shattered and wired shut to aid in its healing, also restoring her hearing. A poignant acting moment came when Mer suffered a panic attack because her children couldn’t visit her during recovery.

The series could portray Alex Karev’s unexpected departure following Justin Chambers’ exit during season 16 by depicting him writing letters to Jo (Camilla Luddington), Mer, and Bailey. These letters would reveal that he had reconnected with Izzie, who had sent him divorce papers years ago, and discovered she had been raising their twins on a farm. Overwhelmed by his newfound family, Alex decided to leave Seattle behind. If anyone claims they anticipated this twist, we’ll prove them a liar.

In season 17, viewers witnessed the unfortunate demise of character Dr. Andrea “Andrew” DeLuca, portrayed by Giacomo Gianniotti. Having battled through his mental health issues, DeLuca had risen to the position of attending physician at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, in a twist typical of Grey’s Anatomy, the life of Dr. DeLuca, who seemed to be getting back on track, was abruptly ended when he was stabbed by an associate of a human trafficker.
