In February, we saw the conclusion of an epoch as Cobra Kai drew to a climactic close following six seasons packed with excitement, humor, and emotional depth. The final episodes offered resolution for our key characters, culminating in an astonishing showdown between John Kreese and Terry Silver. Remarkably, the series finale not only neatly tied up the plot but also included a joke about a TV spin-off of another well-known movie series, Back to the Future. Now, the primary writer of that trilogy has responded to this reference, leaving no room for ambiguity.
In the finale of Cobra Kai, streamable with a Netflix subscription, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel LaRusso meet up at a restaurant for a discussion about their students’ training. Prior to this scene, viewers catch a glimpse and hear two producers, played by Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz (the creators of Cobra Kai), pitching an idea for a spinoff of Back to the Future. This proposed series would take place in the alternate 1985 presented in the second movie of the trilogy. Michael J. Fox, the lead of the franchise, is also mentioned as a potential director for this new show.
The brief instance humorously satirizes the current trend in Hollywood of remakes, reboots, and sequels. Following this, some viewers showed enthusiasm towards such a project. However, Bob Gale, writer of all three Back to the Future films, has since dismissed any possibility or even hinted at disapproval of a future sequel when speaking with People, essentially pouring cold water on the idea.
It seems strange to me that they continuously discuss this topic. Could it be they believe repeating it will make us eventually carry out what they suggest?
For many years, Bob Gale has consistently spoken out against any further development of the popular “Back to the Future” series in a formal sense. Back in February, he bluntly rejected the idea of another film in the Robert Zemeckis-directed franchise by using a strong swear word. In a recent interview, his opposition remained firm and he referenced Zemeckis when explaining why the trilogy should remain as it is now: a complete story.
Essentially, in every interview, people ask things like “Bob, when will there be Back to the Future 4?” or “When will there be a prequel?” or “What about a spinoff?” The answer is always the same – never. Bob Zemeckis once said that it’s perfect enough as it stands, even though it’s not flawless.
There’s much debate among fans about introducing a new installment to the sci-fi franchise. This isn’t just about the game from Telltale years ago or the musical based on the 1985 film. Some fans appear open to a potential sequel, while others prefer that the intellectual property remains untouched. Even Christopher Lloyd, who played Emmett “Doc” Brown, expresses doubts about a follow-up or spinoff.
It appears that the team behind “Cobra Kai” may have a positive outlook about the idea, given their statements. In talks with THR following the series finale’s release within the 2025 TV lineup, they discussed the Back to the Future scene and clarified that it was intended as a nod to their own show, which is also based on an ’80s property, “The Karate Kid”. Additionally, John Hurwitz hinted at something interesting when he mentioned Bob Gale and Robert Zemeckis.
It’s something we understand is extremely unlikely, considering Robert Zemeckis and Robert Gale’s stance against any further Back to the Future projects. However, should they chance upon the finale of Cobra Kai and express interest for more, that serves as our opening for a proposal.
It seems like the group of three producers are open to taking on this project, as long as the original “Back to the Future” team agrees. Although it’s unlikely that will happen, fans of one of Netflix’s top shows can look forward to potential “Cobra Kai” spinoffs in the future.
