Companion 2: Everything You Need to Know About the Highly Anticipated Sequel!

As a follower, I’ve been thrilled to be part of the audience captivated by Drew Hancock’s directorial debut, “Companion.” This film has earned near-universal praise from both moviegoers and critics. Remarkably, it grossed over $36 million worldwide, which is impressive considering its modest budget of only $10 million. To add to the buzz, “Companion” currently holds the title for the most-watched film globally on Max. If you’re curious about future installments, rest assured that there might be more “Companion” stories in the pipeline.

While an official confirmation is still pending, there’s a strong likelihood that Warner Bros. might commission a follow-up. Let’s delve into the details we have at our disposal for now!

A Potential Sequel Will Almost Definitely Feature a New Creative Team

Earlier, Hancock shared with The Hollywood Reporter that he’s not particularly keen on returning to the universe of “Companion”. This movie centers around a group of friends (including an android), whose motivations are murky from the start, as they embark on a weekend trip. During his conversation with THR about the film’s origins, Hancock was asked about potential sequels.

According to Hancock, Warner Bros. doesn’t approve of me writing my sequel. In my view, the storyline for Companion has already been established within this film. That’s as far as I wish to explore it, definitely.

During an interview with Variety, the director expressed a strong intention to explore new projects, yet he appeared receptive to the thought of another creative mind taking up a possible sequel project.

In terms of the narrative, since I believe I’ve shared my perspective enough, I’d prefer to take a step aside and employ a strategy similar to that seen in ‘Alien’ or ‘Aliens’, by introducing another person into the story.

It seems that Hancock might be too busy with a new project – rewriting The Faculty – which could explain his diminished interest. Regardless of the reasons behind his shift towards fresh opportunities, it’s exciting to learn that he’s willing to let another creator take over.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve noticed that often, a fresh creative team can breathe new life into a series, offering unique perspectives and improving follow-up efforts. However, whether or not we get to see a Hancock sequel is ultimately out of my hands; it will be the Warner Bros. executives who make the final decision.

The Ending of Companion Leaves Matters Open-Ended

Major spoilers ahead: Proceed with caution if you haven’t yet watched Companion in its entirety.

If Warner Bros. approves a sequel, there are several paths they could explore in the storyline. The movie concludes with Teddy (Jaboukie Young-White), an employee of Empathix Robotics, transferring control to Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and allowing her full autonomy. With this newfound liberty, Iris takes revenge on Josh (Jack Quaid), the one who rented her, by killing him. In the end, Iris departs into the sunset enjoying a freedom she’s never had before.

In numerous ways, a sequel could be shaped, primarily revolving around the progression of Iris’s tale. The next chapter might choose to exclude any remaining characters from the initial story for a fresh start and dedicate the narrative solely to Iris. Alternatively, we could envision her partnering with a character introduced in the first movie to delve into the corporate activities of Empathix, revealing a darker aspect of the company that was previously unseen.

As a dedicated fan, I want you to know that no matter what unfolds in the future, I’ll make sure to keep you updated every step of the way if any new information about a sequel emerges.

When Will Companion 2 Come Out?

At this moment, Warner Bros. hasn’t revealed any scheduled release date for “Companion 2”, as they haven’t confirmed if a sequel has been commissioned yet. But given its box office success and popularity on streaming platforms, there’s a good chance we might see a sequel in the future.

Given that it takes time for creative minds to conceive and script a story, it’s unlikely we’ll get a follow-up to Companion before 2027 at the earliest. Even if everything goes smoothly, there are numerous factors that must align first, making this a best-case scenario.
