In anticipation of the release of James Gunn‘s Superman movie on July 11, the co-chief of DC Studios has offered a sneak peek at Edi Gathegi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific, in celebration of the character’s anniversary. (Mister Terrific, also known as Michael Holt, was one of the heroes that Gunn initially hinted for the rebooted DC Universe back in 2023, when he shared a comic book cover featuring Superman alongside The Terrifics: Mister Terrific, Phantom Girl, Plastic Man, and Metamorpho.)
On this special day, I’d like to extend my warm congratulations to Mr. Terrific, one of my cherished characters! Here’s an exclusive sneak peek from Superman, featuring Edi Gathegi dressed as Mister Terrific, complete with his distinctive “Fair Play” jacket and T-shaped mask. I’ve had a fantastic time introducing him to the big screen for the first time, alongside my good friend Edi.
In the comic book “The Spectre” issue number 54, published on April 30, 1997, is where Michael Holt’s version of Mister Terrific made his debut. This issue was penned by John Ostrander, known for writing “Suicide Squad”, and illustrated by Tom Mandrake, renowned for his work on “Firestorm”. In this storyline, the spectral figure of The Spectre, Jim Corrigan, intervenes as Michael Holt contemplates suicide. The Spectre shares with Holt the tragic tale of his old friend and Justice Society comrade, Terry Sloane, a hero from the Golden Age who was brutally killed by a villain called the Spirit King.
In conversation with Holt, Corrigan stated, “Mister Terrific played a unique role and none, including Superman, Batman, or even the Spectre, can replace him. He worked directly in the streets, influencing kids who might otherwise have gone astray. He offered an alternative model to the ‘gangster’ lifestyle, one that emphasized ‘fair play.'” (It was during the ’90s.)
2011’s “Mister Terrific” series by Eric Wallace and Gianluca Gugliotta, under DC’s New 52 initiative, showcased Holt as the CEO of Holt Industries, a multibillionaire with numerous degrees surpassing those held by Harvard and Yale faculties combined, and an Olympic gold medalist – all achieved before he turned 30. From his sanctuary in the Ninth Dimension, this extraordinary individual employed his exceptional scientific and technological skills to combat for a brighter future as Mister Terrific.
In the movie Superman, Mister Terrific played by Gathegi joins forces with Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho, a metahuman shapeshifter with elemental powers; Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, who belongs to the Green Lantern Corps empowered by willpower; and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, a character seemingly backed by Stagg Industries.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement for the upcoming cinematic adventure from DC Studios – “Superman,” helmed by director James Gunn and featuring David Corenswet as our beloved Man of Steel, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Mark your calendars, because this blockbuster is set to fly into theaters on July 11!
