Obama Tax

One thing no government official can control is the “Obama tax.”

Michelle Obama refers to the pressures faced by Sasha Obama, aged 23, and Malia Obama, aged 26, as they are the daughters of the former President Barack Obama.

During her April 29 interview on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa”, she jokingly referred to it as the “Obama tax”. She explained that this term would be associated with them for the rest of their lives, but they would also enjoy numerous benefits along with it.

Although her daughters might sometimes feel as though they are being treated differently compared to other young adults, Michelle pointed out that having their extended family around during their early years in the White House eased the pressure on Malia and Sasha. She explained, “The house isn’t what matters, it’s the people living there. My brother, my sister-in-law, my nieces and nephews were all there to help us maintain a sense of stability, and I am thankful that they chose to share this incredible journey with us.

During their conversation, the subject arose with host Kelly Ripa following their discussion on how challenging it was to shield Malia and Sasha (aged 10 and 7 at that time) from public attention during their adolescent years while their father held office.

Michelle, aged 61, reminisced about her children’s busy teenage years, which included driving, attending proms, participating in teams, traveling to various schools, college searches, socializing at parties, consuming alcohol, experimenting with smoking, and engaging in numerous activities. She recollected that every weekend was challenging as she had to ensure their normal teenage experiences didn’t end up on the infamous “Page Six.

The Becoming author shared that it “was a lot of work” and it only got harder as they got older.”

In my personal experience, I was fortunate to have my partner by my side during a crucial phase of our family’s growth. He made a conscious effort to divert attention away from our blossoming girls, ensuring they didn’t overshadow any aspect of our lives together.

During his upbringing, the politician, aged 63, expressed on The Pivot Podcast in October 2024 that the media was generally supportive. He essentially struck a bargain with the press corps: “You can shadow me, discuss me, do whatever is necessary. However, keep my kids out of it because they shouldn’t have to deal with this limelight; they didn’t choose this life. Allow them to live their own lives.” To their credit, the media honored his request and respected his children’s privacy.
