One fan’s evening took a terrifying turn.
On April 30th, during the MLB matchup between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs, an individual tumbled approximately 20 feet from the stands and landed on the playing field at PNC Park during the seventh inning.
In simpler terms, the man was spotted somersaulting during his fall, eventually coming to rest in the warning zone of right field, causing a brief pause in the ongoing game.
As reported by the Pirates, emergency responders from Pittsburgh, including EMS, as well as staff members from both the Pirates and Cubs teams, promptly attended to the situation and provided medical aid. The organization also verified that the man was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, though they added that no additional details are currently available.
In their communication, they expressed their sympathies, a sentiment that was later echoed by the Cubs’ account as well. It read, ‘We are thinking of him and his loved ones.’
According to a representative from Pittsburgh Public Safety (as reported by NBC News), the supporter is currently in a severe state of health. Moreover, they have disclosed to this media outlet that officers from the Pittsburgh Police Department’s Violent Crimes Investigation Team are currently probing the incident.
As reported by NBC News, Sam Miller, a witness to the incident, shared with them that it happened swiftly, making it unclear whether he deliberately jumped or accidentally fell.
Miller also reported that first responders strapped the man to a stretcher, immobilizing him.
Several athletes seemed noticeably rattled as they observed the situation, among them was Pittsburgh Pirates’ outfield player and designated hitter Andrew McCutchen. He was spotted putting his hand over his mouth in astonishment following a brief kneel.
The 38-year-old later shared his reaction on social media.
Very deeply regret the events of tonight,” McCutchen posted on X, formerly Twitter, after the game. “I can’t help but consider that person, his family, and friends. Tonight, I send my prayers to him. Let us remember his loved ones and hold our families a bit closer tonight. I wish him a swift recovery. May God be with you all.
Pirates Manager Derek Shelton also addressed the incident at a post-game conference.
At the outset, he expressed his sympathies for the unfortunate incident during the match, as reported by WPXI. Furthermore, he acknowledged the efforts of our medical team, the Chicago Cubs medical team, EMS, and all who responded to the situation. He also requested that everyone keep the affected individual in their thoughts and prayers.
