Comedian Tackles Climate Crisis with Laughter

In a time when people are deeply anxious and uncertain about the climate predicament, could humor be a means to alleviate these concerns? Comedian Stuart Goldsmith seems determined to tackle this task with his unique brand of comedy.

Many comedians find that when they confront real-life issues, their content seems to flow effortlessly. This is because these challenges often serve as their inspiration or source material.

I’ve experienced a profound apprehension about our planet’s future, which I call ‘eco-dread.’ It’s distinct from eco-anxiety and stems from the escalating climate change and environmental crises that I found myself worrying over extensively. Before embracing climate comedy, Goldsmith grappled with this fear.

He went on to say, “I discovered that I couldn’t write about anything else in 2022. Instead, I showcased a work-in-progress at the Edinburgh Festival with a piece of paper containing all the thoughts that cross my mind when I’m deeply concerned about climate change.”

At one point, I recall telling one of my agents’ helpers, “It seems like I might create an entire performance centered around the climate predicament.

Goldsmith felt compelled to share more about climate change due to his own concerns, as he sought innovative methods to present this topic to audiences who typically encounter it in a rather disheartening manner.

Goldsmith expressed that avoiding the subject is far simpler, but engaging with it, connecting with others, clarifying as necessary, and finding humor in the process is an immense task. However, he has found himself deeply interested in this challenge now, and he doesn’t find any reason to discuss other topics anymore.

For Goldsmith, striking a balance is crucial: he wants people to have fun and laugh at his jokes, but also learn more about the climate crisis. It’s essential for him that his comedy doesn’t come off as preaching, given that many are already aware of the issue, when he’s crafting his material.

My goal is to infuse humor into various topics, particularly climate change. Since I’m a comedian who enjoys being playful and coming up with whimsical, absurd ideas, this approach allows me to bring out the funniest version of myself. So I strive to find the silly aspects within climate-related subjects.

Goldsmith occasionally explores the topic of veganism, yet he doesn’t advocate a rigid stance that everyone should become vegan. Instead, it could serve as food for thought for his audience.

He shared: “My work revolves around advocating for a vegan lifestyle. Now, I’m not vegan myself, but I strongly encourage it, as it allows me to discuss climate matters related to veganism effectively. For instance, switching from beef to pork can reduce an individual’s food emissions by up to 20 percent, which is a substantial decrease.

Instead of instructing his audience about living life differently, Goldsmith demonstrates his own efforts – frequently with disastrous results.

Goldsmith mentioned that his current focus is on narrating engaging tales, with a touch of humor as he discusses the activities he’s involved in.

However, while laughter may not directly solve the climate crisis, it does have the power to keep conversations about it ongoing.

Goldsmith pointed out that the statement might serve as a means of dealing with situations for both the speaker and listeners. Yet, he suggested that this coping could potentially spark transformation.

I believe that laughter and discussions have the power to spark change. The exchange of thoughts and conversations among people often leads to transformation. Among all the chats I recall, those shared with friends that bring laughter stand out as the most precious moments in my life. Therefore, when we’re laughing, our minds become more open to new ideas.

It seems quite clear that our method of discussing topics can indeed be improved, made smoother, easier to navigate, even injected with humor so effectively that it significantly contributes to the conversation.
