One Piece Animator Calls For Firings As Grand Line Controversy Rages

One Piece is currently enjoying great success due to its anime’s resurgence and the final saga surprising fans across all platforms. However, there seems to be tension in the world of the Grand Line. While Toei Animation briefly halted work on the Future Island Arc to focus on remastering the Fishman Island Arc, one animator, Sota Shigetsugu, appears unhappy with certain colleagues. In an unexpected post on social media, since removed, Shigetsugu voiced significant discontent towards the sound team responsible for enhancing the sounds of Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates.

In a since-removed post, I, an ardent One Piece fan like many of us here, passionately expressed my concerns about the sound team’s performance in our beloved series to Toei Animation. Sota’s post echoed my sentiments, stating that the current sound team isn’t up to professional standards, as they believe it should be. Previously, I had voiced my disappointment with the quality of the anime sounds, hoping for immediate improvements to match the stunning animation. Although Shigetsugu hasn’t provided specific details, his post has ignited a heated discussion among One Piece fans about the sound quality in the anime adaptation.

The Works of Sota Shigetsugu

Apart from contributing to the main “One Piece” series and the movie “One Piece: Red,” Sota has showcased his animation skills across the Grand Line. Beyond the escapades of Luffy and his crew, Shigetsugu has also been involved in prominent anime titles such as “Attack on Titan,” “Jujutsu Kaisen,” “Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation,” “Chainsaw Man,” and “Kaiju No. 8.” At the time this article was written, Sota remains a member of the “One Piece” animation team, leaving us to wonder if any apology will be issued or how the anime sound team might react.

Renowned animator Vincent Chansard recently expressed some thoughts on One Piece, but he didn’t mean these comments as criticism towards the creative team. Chansard analyzed the latest battle between Luffy and Admiral Kizaru, explaining how Luffy’s strategy in the fight differed from a traditional head-on approach:

“At a certain point, Kizaru realizes that if Luffy just dodges everything, he won’t win outright. So, he changes his tactics, reminiscent of the Luffy vs Enel fight in Skypiea. At this stage of the story, Luffy isn’t aiming to defeat Kizaru; instead, he’s merely buying time. He dodges, playfully taunts, and keeps things light-hearted. He only unleashes a named attack after Kiki successfully lands a hit. In fact, during several parts of the battle, Luffy even held Kizaru in the palm of his hand.
