Mathew Knowles is saying Tina Knowles’ name and singing her praises.
The retired music boss, who co-parents Beyoncé and Solange Knowles with his former spouse, extended warm congratulations to her following her accomplishment as a #1 New York Times Bestselling author upon publishing her memoir titled “Matriarch.
In a photo featuring Tina with her book, Matthew, at the age of 73, posted on May 1st, “Congratulations, Tina, on your number one New York Times bestseller ‘Matriarch.’ Matthew.
Mathew’s show of support for Tina comes just a week after she recently shared where they stand.
Tina stated on the April 24th episode of the ‘Gayle King in the House’ podcast that she and Matthew remain friendly because they accomplished many positive things together.
She went on, “It’s been quite some time since then. Time and again, I’ve affirmed that, indeed, there were challenging, painful periods in our relationship with Matthew. Yet, throughout it all, I never had any doubt about his love for me or the children.
In her published work, Tina openly described their marriage, its end, and even mentioned a brief reconciliation attempt in 2011 when he underwent therapy.
I initially doubted him, but his unwavering pursuit, coupled with evidence of his self-improvement, left me captivated. As our relationship blossomed, I found myself inexplicably drawn back into the whirlwind of love.” Furthermore, “the gravitational force between us, this celestial tether I had attempted to sever on numerous occasions, seemed more potent than ever before.
Nevertheless, after being married from 2015 to 2024, Tina ultimately had to part ways permanently with Richard Lawson, regardless of their shared past.
People often ask me, ‘How did you manage to stay together for so long?’ Tina revealed on CBS Mornings April 23. “I respond by saying, ‘Well, I was married for 33 years, but not all of them were difficult.’ Perhaps 15 years were challenging, yet we had extended periods where things went very well.

In her book titled “Matriarch,” published in 2025, Tina Knowles expressed concern that Solange Knowles was too young for motherhood when she got pregnant at the age of 17. Despite this worry, Tina supported Solange’s decision to have the baby and even tried to persuade Solange’s partner, Daniel Smith, to encourage her to delay marriage and parenthood together.
In my message, I shared that Daniel had called us back, emotionally distraught. Solange exclaimed, “Fk you, and fk my mother, and fk Angie (Beyoncé, my niece), because I know they made you do this.” She ended the call abruptly, then vanished for two whole days. This behavior was characteristic of her, but her anger left us terrified. And I must admit, I was furious too.
Solange gave birth to Julez Smith and tied the knot with Daniel in 2004, surrounded by family. However, their marriage didn’t last, as they parted ways in 2007.
Regarding Angie Beyince, it’s worth noting that she took on the Beyonce surname. This is due to the fact that Tina and her siblings all had unique spellings of their last name. On her birth certificate, Tina was known as Celestine Ann Beyoncé.
In the novel Matriarch, it struck Tina that she desired to alter something. Sitting alongside her brother Larry one evening while he worked on his assignments, she penned down, “I declared I wished to rehearse writing my name, so he lent me his pen and read each letter for me.” When they reached her last name, Larry needed a brief moment to remember.
I was brought back to a memory: how each one of us children spelled our family surname uniquely, it was Buyince for some, others had it as Beyonce, Boyance or even differently. It always made me chuckle.
When she insisted that her mother Agnéz take action regarding her incorrectly spelled birth certificate, Tina went on to say, “I was informed, ‘Just be grateful you’re receiving a birth certificate.’ Because, at one point in time, Black people weren’t even issued birth certificates.” Furthermore, Agnéz mentioned, “‘Your name is lovely.’
It’s clear that the name became fitting for her, as Tina named her firstborn Beyoncé. “I didn’t care about how it was spelled when I received it,” Tina wrote. “It was ours, our history. The most precious thing I owned, and now I could pass it on. I’ve carried a legacy.
Prior to the birth of their daughter Blue Ivy Carter in 2012, Beyoncé experienced several miscarriages. These rumors spread by malicious individuals that she had falsified her pregnancy or her baby bump was not genuine, greatly upset Beyoncé’s mother, Tina.
Tina expressed her frustration by writing, “That was some of the most foolish behavior,” lamenting that she wished to express her anger towards certain individuals and loudly correct these misguided people. They were unaware of the struggles faced by Tina, Jay, and their entire family. It was a particularly difficult period when Beyoncé would not permit Tina to speak openly about it publicly.
In hindsight, she thinks Beyoncé was right not to dignify any of the bogus stories with a response.
In every fiber of my being, I resonate with Tina’s words: “As a devoted mom, the persistent gossip leaves me feeling powerless, unable to safeguard my little ones. I can tackle any other challenge that arises, but these whispers? They seem beyond my grasp.
In one of her writings, Tina expressed that she and Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé and Solange’s father whom she wed in 1980, had a remarkably good relationship most of the time. However, she also mentioned that their connection was of a celestial nature, but his unpredictable actions would sometimes surface.
She went on stating, “He’d misbehave or deceive me, and I’d express my limits. He’d ask for forgiveness, weeping and vowing to improve. However, ‘the same pattern would repeat itself,’ Tina penned down. ‘But I reasoned that this was just what married couples did.’
Tina questioned whether she’d be able to manage independently, given that she hadn’t held a job since becoming a mother. Her thoughts revolved around the question, “What would happen if I walked away from him?
When Tina was expecting Solange (born in 1986), her marriage was falling apart at an alarming rate, and she couldn’t find solutions fast enough to save it, despite the pregnancy. Matthew’s extramarital affairs had become so public that it was no longer tenable for her to remain married.
Mathew was an “excellent father,” she pointed out, “However, there were problems that didn’t allow him to be a great husband at the time.
In response to rumors suggesting that certain poignant lyrics in Beyoncé’s album “Lemonade” may have been about him, Matthew expressed his curiosity, just like everyone else, as he too couldn’t be sure.
He shared with Mark Thompson during an interview on SiriusXM’s Make It Plain in April 2016 that he was unsure whom Beyoncé was referring to throughout her entire series. However, he expressed pride and mentioned that he believed Beyoncé had really tested the boundaries of creativity with this HBO special.
When directly questioned about the opening chapter titled “Intuition,” which reads, “You remind me of my father, a magician. Able to exist in two places at once. In the lineage of men in my blood, you come home at 3 a.m. and lie to me” – Matthew stated that he had no particular response to it.
“I know the response you want to get,” he told Mark. “You’re not going to get that response.”
2009 saw Tina deciding to end her 29-year long marriage when she discovered that her spouse had fathered a child outside their relationship.
In her book “Matriarch” about the apes, she expressed that this situation was unlike any other time she decided to part ways with him. Now, she felt there was no other option. Matthew’s paternity papers served on October 2, 2009, during Beyoncé’s recognition as Billboard’s Woman of the Year, caused an upheaval that she had to keep up with in her life. For years since then, she maintained her usual rhythm and let work serve as a distraction and a means of coping.
However, Matthew persisted in winning her over, and as he pursued her, she admitted that she was falling in love with him all over again.
Which is how she ended up in a situationship with her own spouse.
Instead of writing “she ‘knew the kids would be so mad at us if they found out we were back together’,” Tina could have written “She realized that the children would be extremely upset with us if they discovered we had reconciled.
It wasn’t long before the children realized what was happening when they visited Tina on Mother’s Day in 2010 as a surprise. Bey, the eldest, gave a serious nod, according to Tina’s account, while Solange reacted with excitement due to her protective instincts.
Tina noted that each person showed love for their father uniquely, and at times, she found herself deeply affected when her youngest seemed to emulate his father’s missteps.
In the year 2011, the divorce process resumed and was completed. Matthew, who is father to a son and daughter born in 2010 (one with each of his former partners), has been wedded to Gena Knowles since 2013.
Tina went on to marry Richard Lawson in 2015 but filed for divorce in 2023.
Unlike with her first husband, however, Tina’s second marriage didn’t end over some big betrayal.
In her book “Matriarch,” she shared that she had been friends with Richard for numerous years prior to their 10-year relationship. She emphasized that he possessed many admirable traits, but those qualities didn’t surface between them. At age 69, she recognized that she deserved far more and yearned for happiness. She desired someone who would be joyful upon seeing her enter a room.
Tina wrote that she made the decision to divorce Richard “totally without malice.”
In 2024, I was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer, a challenging journey that began when I received my diagnosis. Fortunately, during this trying time, Kelly Rowland, Beyoncé, Solange, and Angie stood by me like pillars of strength. Not only did they visit me at the hospital, but Beyoncé took me into her home following my lumpectomy. She also kept in close touch with my mother’s doctor, ensuring she remained informed about my progress throughout my recovery. Their unwavering support meant everything to me during those difficult days.
In a turn of events reminiscent of caring for a loved one, Tina found herself under the roof of Beyoncé’s home. This was to ensure a smooth recovery process, much like how my mother or I would have stepped in during such times.
