Taking a retrospective glance at Mary Jane Watson’s relationship with the Venom symbiote highlights an essential drawback that comes with their bond. The announcement that Mary Jane has become All-New Venom left the comic book world in shock, as four characters – Madame Masque, Luke Cage, Robbie Robertson, and Rick Jones – were initially considered prime suspects under the symbiote’s control. As issues of All-New Venom progressed, each suspect was gradually ruled out until Mary Jane emerged as the last one standing. With the major revelation now in the open, All-New Venom delves deeper into the story to uncover a hidden aspect about Mary Jane and her connection with Venom.
In a unique reveal, ComicBook offers an early look at All-New Venom #6 penned by Al Ewing, illustrated by Carlos Gomez, colored by Frank D’Armata, and lettered by VC’s Clayton Cowles. This issue takes us back to the Venom War, the series that set the stage for All-New Venom, where Eddie Brock and his son Dylan Brock engaged in a battle to determine the last Venom standing. In the midst of this conflict, Mary Jane, as her Jackpot persona, found herself struggling against a colossal symbiote known as Arachniote. At that point, Peter Parker was reconnected with the Venom symbiote and once again donned it. The symbiote managed to eliminate the unpredictability from Mary Jane’s Jackpot gadget, empowering her to overcome the villain with a formidable strength.
Mary Jane and Venom are having a conversation with Robbie Robertson and Paul Rabin within their apartment. However, their seating arrangement on the couch is somewhat uncomfortable, appearing as if they were a couple themselves. With Venom’s arm casually slung over Mary Jane’s shoulder, she explains that they must maintain a connection; whether she’s wearing the symbiote or it’s in her bloodstream. Venom then elaborates that their survival depends on staying together.
“Or we’ll die, yes,” Venom says. “And that’s a whole other story.”
The concluding glimpse of issue #6 of All-New Venom offers a tantalizing teaser, significantly advancing the narrative involving Mary Jane Watson and Venom. In certain aspects, it echoes the fresh alliance between Eddie Brock and Carnage. Their bond was forged at the end of the Venom War, with their tale continuing in Eddie Brock: Carnage. Both characters found themselves perilously close to death, uniting out of necessity rather than convenience. However, the current state of affairs between MJ and the symbiote seemed harmonious in All-New Venom, but this disclosure suggests that there are deeper layers to this enigma than initially perceived.
Ewing revealed that when asked about selecting Mary Jane as the new Venom, he shared with Marvel.com, “I initially aimed to create an old-fashioned ‘whodunit’ mystery to signify a change in tone for the fresh volume, leaning towards something less ‘cosmic chaos’ and more ‘gritty street action.’ We brainstormed numerous names, both for the misleading characters and the potential host, and we consistently found ourselves drawn back to Mary Jane.
After unveiling the mystery, Ewing playfully hinted at the tone of the All-New Venom, “The story remains lighthearted yet there’s a possibility that the ominous undertone of past Venom titles might resurface. A significant shift is that since we now know the host, we can delve deeper into their relationship, even depicting intense battles in the future. Being bound together doesn’t equate to friendship or shared views, particularly regarding Eddie Brock.
Peter won’t be the one initially informed… and when he does get wind of it, it will happen under some rather difficult conditions. We’ll observe how he reacts.
