The popularity of superhero stories remains high, as multiple interconnected worlds are currently being explored. Fans eagerly anticipate several upcoming DC films, one of them being the developing Clayface project penned by renowned horror writer Mike Flanagan. Unfortunately, this project seems to have encountered another delay, but there’s a silver lining.
James Gunn approved the development of Clayface, along with other initial projects under the DCU banner called Gods and Monsters. Fans are excited to see how these projects unfold, given Peter Safran’s description of it as pure horror. However, according to a tweet from scoop source Umberto Gonzalez, filming for Clayface has been moved from the summer to October instead. The silver lining is that this schedule change indicates that the movie is still on track for production.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel the rollercoaster ride that is the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. Titles get announced, developed, and sometimes, much to my dismay, abandoned by their studios. Warner Bros., in particular, has a history of this, as they unfortunately shelved the Batgirl movie after investing millions into its production. So, with bated breath, I find myself hoping for the best when it comes to Clayface.

Mike Flanagan, known for crafting some of the most chilling horror movies and series in recent times like “Hush”, “The Haunting of Hill House”, and “Midnight Mass”, is responsible for penning the script for Clayface. This development is exciting for fans of the genre. However, it will be James Watkins who takes on the role of director, with his past works including “Speak No Evil” and “Black Mirror”. It’s intriguing to consider how body horror might integrate within the broader DC Universe.
A small time frame doesn’t significantly impact Clayface’s rumored production kickoff. As of now, there’s no sign that the film’s 2026 release date will be altered. However, we’ll need to wait and see if and when filming officially begins on the DC project.

Although details regarding the storyline of the Clayface film remain undisclosed, the timing appears advantageous for this particular type of comic book movie. The resurgence of body horror was catalyzed by Demi Moore’s The Substance, which garnered critical acclaim and recognition during Awards Season, including at the 2025 Academy Awards. Therefore, audiences might be primed to appreciate a comic book adaptation of this subgenre with Watkins’ upcoming release.
Warner Bros. has demonstrated a willingness to venture into uncharted territories with DC characters, such as the Joker franchise and The Batman by Matt Reeves, which are not part of the primary universe. Upcoming film Clayface is anticipated to be set within the new DC Universe, implying that it could shape future projects in this expanded universe.
It’s projected that Clayface will premiere in theaters on September 11th, 2026. However, other DC films such as Superman are slated for release in 2025.
