Dolly Parton got emotional sharing her feelings about moving on following the death of her husband.

Approximately two months after the passing of her longtime companion, Carl Dean, who was 82 years old, the 79-year-old offered insights into her current life and health status.

In that interview on May 2 with Today, Dolly expressed, “It deeply affects me when the topic comes up. We shared 60 years together. I’ve been in love with him since I was 18. It’s quite challenging to adapt, just trying to break old routines and habits.

The renowned figure in country music went on saying, “I’m doing well, deeply engrossed in my projects, which has turned out to be a great blessing for me. Yet, he will forever remain in my heart, and my affection for him remains unchanged.

After Carl passed away on March 3, Dolly Parton participated in two significant events in the following weeks. Firstly, she attended the premiere of her co-produced show, “Dolly Parton’s Threads: My Songs In Symphony World“, which took place at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville. Secondly, she was present for the start of the 40th season celebration at her Dollywood theme park. A heartwarming video of a boy’s enthusiastic reaction to spotting the singer during a parade at this event became widely popular online.

The singer known for “I Will Always Love You” expressed that she became deeply emotional on that particular day following the parade. This was shortly after the loss of Carl, and the overwhelming feelings of affection had been building up inside her. As soon as she got into the van, she cried profusely for a long time, immersing herself in the flood of love and emotion.

Dolly previously expressed gratitude for all the support she’s received.

She later expressed gratitude to her fans for the messages, cards, and flowers they sent in remembrance of her husband Carl. Although she can’t respond individually to everyone, she wanted them to know it meant the world to her. Now, he is with God and she finds peace in that. Her love for him will remain eternal.

Days later, Dolly shared that she has dedicated her new song “If You Hadn’t Been There” to Carl.

She shared on Instagram, “I became enamored with Carl Dean when I was 18. For 60 beautiful and significant years, we’ve been together. Just like all timeless love tales, they don’t conclude. They persist in our memories and melodies. He has always been the shining protagonist of my narrative, and I dedicate this song to him.

On the track, Dolly refers to her spouse as her pillar of strength and reminisces about his unwavering support throughout their journey. The song “If You Hadn’t Been There” contains the verses: “I wouldn’t exist / If not for your presence / By my side / Expressing your concern / You inspired me to dream / Beyond what I thought was possible.

In 1964, Dolly Parton had recently graduated from high school and left behind two former boyfriends in Sevierville, Tennessee. Starting a new relationship was not something she was considering as she moved to Nashville.

Unfortunately, it was on the very same street, en route to a laundromat, that she encountered Carl Dean, when she first stepped foot in the city renowned for its music.

According to what was recalled (Dean, who passed away on March 3, 2025, at the age of 82, didn’t speak to the media), it is said that he was passing by in a white Chevrolet when he shouted, “You’re going to get sunburned out here, young lady!

She mentioned in her 2020 book “Dolly Parton, Songteller: My Life in Lyrics” that they began conversing, and I found myself drawn to him, while he felt the same about me. In a different interview, the petite artist (she was just 18 when they crossed paths) described Dean as particularly tanned due to his towering height of 6-foot-2, which made him stand out against her short stature. Since he ran an asphalt paving business with his father, he spent a lot of time working outside and thus developed a sun-kissed complexion.

She didn’t immediately jump into his car, but instead warned him about taking unknown people on back roads due to potential danger. This caution was mentioned in Stephen Miller’s 2011 biography titled “Smart Blonde”. Dolly Parton did invite Dean to visit her at her aunt and uncle’s house the following day, although she only sat with him outside. He returned every day for a week, and on their first date, he drove her to his parents’ house first because, as Parton explained, “he said he knew right from the moment he saw me that I was the one he wanted.

However, as she began gaining recognition as a songwriter, frequently working with her uncle Bill Owens, her boss at Combine Music, Fred Foster, cautioned that it might not be wise for her to marry at this pivotal moment in her career, as she was on the brink of major success as a singer.

Instead of postponing their grand wedding ceremony, she and Dean decided to elope on May 30, 1966, in Ringgold, Ga. Avie Lee Parton, the bride’s mother, was the only witness at their intimate ceremony, also acting as their wedding photographer.

Dolly Parton clarified that her professional name hasn’t been altered, as she was already established in the music industry under her birth name, even before signing her first record deal.

As for me, if I had opted for the name Dolly Dean back in 2014, as I shared with The Guardian, I would have affectionately referred to myself as Double D instead!

In 1966, at the grand BMI Awards dinner, Parton accompanied her husband to an event where they both received recognition in the country music category, specifically for their songwriting collaboration on “Put It Off Until Tomorrow.

Later on, Dean took off his tuxedo without even making it to the car. According to Parton in her book, he said, “I’m glad for you. Do whatever you want to do. But I won’t ever ask to go to another one of those events again, because I’m not going.” And since then, he has kept his word.

She usually replies “Stay away!” jokingly, but there’s a grain of truth in that. Despite my frequent travels, we genuinely cherish each other when we’re together, and it’s the small things we do that matter.

On one of their initial dinner outings, they opted for the McDonald’s drive-thru, as recalled by Parton, and their dining preferences as a couple remained relatively simple (although it’s worth noting that Forbes estimated Parton’s net worth to be $440 million in 2023). They frequently visited local eateries and took road trips, with Ringgold—the place they got married—being one of their frequent stops.

Dolly Parton expressed in 2014 to Billboard, “I enjoy reading, cooking, and spending time with my husband while we travel in our small RV. Even after long tours covering thousands of miles, I’d say, ‘Let’s hit the road again.’ My husband might complain, ‘Aren’t you tired yet?’ But I respond, ‘I’m a nomad at heart. I can’t get enough of it.’ When I’m away from the spotlight, my life remains quite straightforward.

Though if you wanted to catch her and Dean at Publix or Walmart, you had to stay up late.

Dolly Parton shared in 2019, during the launch of her Netflix series “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” that she often visited places open throughout the night. She mentioned that these late-night outings were fortunate for her, as she encountered only a few people. Despite being around others, she doesn’t mind – in fact, she adores people – but she wants to avoid any delays in her shopping spree.

Despite scarcity of images of the couple together in public settings, which may have puzzled Dolly Parton fans over time, leading some to speculate that her husband is fictional, she wrote in her 2020 book, “That has caused many people to think my husband doesn’t exist and that I invented him.” However, the music icon has occasionally shared vintage photos with the public.

She playfully featured her partner on the cover of her 1969 album “My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy,” a combined image depicting Parton lost in thought about her rough-and-tumble lumberjack-clad companion.

However, Parton understood Dean’s discomfort with being in the limelight, so she did her best to keep him away from it whenever she could.

In 2020, I shared with ET that he’s a tranquil, introspective individual. I speculated that should he venture into the limelight, his peaceful moments would be few and far between – a prediction I believe holds true for him.

On their 50th wedding anniversary, they renewed their vows at home, which gave Parton the chance to don the stunning wedding dress she had always envisioned. Moreover, she composed a song titled “Forever Love” to accompany their vows. This track was one of several inspired by her and Dean’s enduring love affair on her 2016 album called Pure and Simple.

She shared with Rolling Stone that she donned an exquisite dress for their second wedding, while her husband looked dashing like a leading man from Hollywood. A small group of family and friends attended, as they preferred to keep things low-key to avoid stress or tension. They carefully planned the event, opting for a simple ceremony at their chapel on their property instead of a grand affair. All in all, it was a fun and relaxed occasion for them both.

In addition to the typical queries about her methods for a successful marriage, Parton also answered a fair number of questions concerning her and Dean’s relationship status as a couple.

As I once pondered over the idea of feeling remorseful, Dolly Parton shared with Billboard about not having children. Previously, when my husband and I were courting and later married, we naturally assumed we would have offspring. We didn’t take any preventive measures, thinking instead that we might. We even selected names for potential children, but life took an unexpected turn. Nowadays, I find myself expressing, “God did not intend for me to bear children, so I get to be everyone else’s child.

In an interview with The Guardian, it was revealed that if they had a daughter, they would have named her Carla. They often pondered on the kind of children they might have had together.

Parton expressed that she believes she could have excelled as a mother, stating, “I likely would have sacrificed everything else for the sake of my children, as I would have felt remorseful if I had left them behind to work. My life may have taken an entirely different course, and it’s possible I wouldn’t have become as famous.

But as the fourth of 12 siblings, she has had plenty of people in her life to dote on.

She shared with Billboard that she has a strong bond with her family, as five of her younger siblings lived with her and her partner for several years. She also mentioned a close relationship with their nieces and nephews. As they grow older, she and her partner often reflect on the fact that they chose not to have children, which means they no longer have children to worry about.

Which also left more time to focus on each other.

In 2020, Parton shared with People that we still have our special moments, similar to the arrival of spring when the first bright daffodils bloom. Even if there’s still some snow on the ground, my husband always gifts me a bouquet. Often, he also writes a small poem. To me, this is invaluable. It feels like a date all by itself.

Regardless if it was a cozy dinner at home with candles or spending the night in a Days Inn (so long as the room is tidy and has a restroom), they found utmost joy in simply living their lives.

Despite Dean never attending events like the Grammys or Oscars, Parton always seems to be dressed up elegantly, even sleeping doesn’t interrupt her makeup routine and she often looks glamorous without any special occasion. Consequently, Dean frequently observed his wife in her stylish, sophisticated setting.

She stated that he assumes she will consistently present herself nicely for him because she never approves of laziness at home. However, mostly, this means he doesn’t care about her clothing choices as long as she is content. He cherishes her just the way she is.
