During the Kentucky Derby weekend in 2025, Dannielynn Birkhead paid tribute to her mother, Anna Nicole Smith, by adopting a classic style reminiscent of her.

18-year-old Dannielynn appeared at the Barnstable Brown Gala, donning the identical strapless black dress that her late mother had worn to the same event 21 years earlier. Similar to her mom, she styled her hair in a relaxed updo.

The teenager was joined by her father Larry Birkhead, who was formerly married to Anna Nicole, as they continued a tradition that started fifteen years ago and is repeated annually.

Kicking off the Kentucky Derby weekend, the 52-year-old posted on Instagram May 2: “Dannielynn and I are starting things off. First stop is the Barnstable-Brown Gala. Dannielynn is donning a dress that Anna Nicole wore at this event exactly 21 years ago. It’s like life coming full circle. She selected the dress because it once belonged to her mother, calling it ‘super cool.’ Next on our agenda: attending the Kentucky Derby races.

Apart from Larry’s niece Chloe, the pair of father and daughter were joined as well. In his social media post, he mentioned, “I’ll make an effort not to embarrass them with my dancing skills.

And it’s just one of many the tight-knit pair share.

Last September, I, being a dedicated father, took to Instagram to wish my daughter a heartfelt happy 18th birthday. The celebration was themed around “Beetlejuice”, but what truly stole the show was the sentiment behind it all. I captioned the post with, “You are my entire heart.” After this joyous occasion, words seem inadequate to convey the depth of my love for her. I wish for her to keep moving forward, embodying humility and kindness, and sharing the love she’s been given generously with others. I am immensely proud of her every step of the way.

In our household, she’s a frequent topic of conversation, and we often swap stories and amusing anecdotes about her. At home, we also have items that are hers, such as a painting adorned with some rather expressive phrases on its reverse side. I shared this during my interview with TopMob News at the derby red carpet event in 2024.

For the past fifteen years, they’ve consistently attended this particular event as a pair. However, it wasn’t until 2010 that their decision to go together was made at the very last moment.

He shared that one year, the babysitter couldn’t make it, so he ended up taking care of her instead. As she started to walk and become more independent, they would play on the carpet together, and this activity eventually turned into a cherished tradition.

And it’s just one of many the tight-knit pair share.

In September, Larry conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to his daughter on her 18th birthday via Instagram, accompanying it with a touching message. He titled the post after their unique “Beetlejuice” themed party. “You are my whole being,” he wrote. “I adore you more than words can articulate. May you persist in your path, embodying ‘humble and kind’, and share the love you’ve received with countless others. I am immensely proud of you.

Larry mentioned that the attire was acquired through Julien’s Auction, with the earnings going towards charitable causes.
