Warning: SPOILERS for 1923 Season 2’s Finale – “A Dream and a Memory”
In the disappointing climax of the second season of 1923, a surprising highlight was screenwriter Taylor Sheridan’s rehabilitation of one of the prequel’s most wicked characters. The finale saw Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) make his entrance in Montana, contributing to the conflict that erupted upon his arrival. In an epic conclusion to 1923 season 2, Spencer initially aided Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) in neutralizing Donald Whitfield’s (Timothy Dalton) men at Livingston’s train station, marking a dramatic opening to the ensuing strategic struggle that culminated at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch.
In a bittersweet turn of events following the defeat of the militia who attacked their homestead, Spencer contributed significantly to the Dutton family’s victory. However, his triumph was overshadowed by the tragic loss of his wife, Alexandra of Sussex (Julia Schlaepfer), who succumbed to complications from hypothermia at a hospital in Bozeman. Remarkably, the resolution involving their initial antagonist in the 1923 series was both unexpected and one of the most effective and fulfilling storylines in the finale of season 2.
Banner Creighton Had One Of 1923 Season 2’s Most Satisfying Stories
Banner’s Story Was Dynamic From Start To Finish
In the final episode of season 2 in 1923, Banner Creighton underwent significant character development, resulting in one of the show’s most intricately developed storylines. At the start of season 1, we find Banner as a diligent sheep herder struggling to keep his livelihood afloat during challenging times. His dire circumstances often led him to act impulsively, such as allowing his sheep to graze on other ranches and the Yellowstone Ranch, and attacking the Dutton family after they retaliated by hanging him from a tree. However, throughout the season, Banner undergoes a transformation.
In the 1923 season 2, Banner finds himself close to Whitfield, which reveals Donald’s cruel and sadistic character. As Banner struggles with Whitfield’s actions, he understands that while Jacob Dutton didn’t mind what happened to him, Jacob wasn’t as malicious as his wealthy patron proved to be. Recognizing that aligning with Whitfield isn’t worth the benefits the mining tycoon offers, Banner decides to leave Montana in search of a fresh start for his family, while preserving his own humanity. However, Jacob intercepts him at the train station, telling him he can’t escape the conflict he initiated.
In this situation, it’s clear that Banner values his family’s safety above all else, informing Jacob that he will remain as long as they can escape. This shared dedication to their families is evident in the bond between Dutton and Creighton, both of whom prioritize their kin’s welfare over everything else. Despite giving Jacob a severe warning about Whitfield being just the start of those trying to seize his ranch, Banner intervenes to save Jacob from Clyde’s gunfire. In turn, Creighton gets wounded by a bullet himself. Even though Banner had caused much trouble for the Duttons, witnessing him die was truly saddening, showcasing one of the most impactful narratives in the series “1923”.
The Dutton Family Had Disappointing Endings In 1923 Season 2’s Finale
The Dutton Family Lacked Satisfying Conclusions
In comparison to other 1920s Duttons, Banner’s story stood out as one of the most comprehensive and impactful. Although Spencer experienced significant events, many plotlines involving the Dutton family members lost momentum in the final episode due to the uncertainty surrounding Alex Dutton’s fate. Even their reunion, though brief, felt hurried, especially considering the traumatic experiences Alex Dutton encountered during her journey with her partner in 1923>.
Regarding Banner’s death being equally intense and startling as Alex’s, the antagonist boasted one of the finest narratives of the year 1923, even surpassing some of the Dutton family’s most heart-wrenching scenes.
