Star Wars Just Crushed a HUGE Return!

Star Wars has a history of abandoned projects: For instance, Rian Johnson was planning a trilogy following Star Wars: The Last Jedi that never materialized, and Josh Trank, director of Fan4stic, once worked on a standalone Boba Fett film before the character reappeared in live-action on The Mandalorian. It seems like we hear about another unrealized movie or TV show every few weeks online. Recently, even Emperor Palpatine actor Ian McDiarmid discussed a potential series focusing on his character’s younger years.

McDiarmid hinted at a potential Palpatine series concentrating on the Sith’s apprenticeship under Darth Plagueis the Wise, a character who first appeared in live-action during the only season of Star Wars: The Acolyte. This would have positioned the project chronologically in the years preceding Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, possibly allowing for the return of a well-known character from the Star Wars universe.

A Palpatine TV Show Would’ve Been the Perfect Playground for Mace Windu

During Palpatine’s early life, details are scarce, but it is known that at some point he started training under Darth Plagueis, learning dark Force abilities. Plagueis was terrified of death and they sought ways to achieve immortality. A series or storyline focusing on this period might delve into Palpatine’s ambition to overthrow his master, but there isn’t much substantial information to build upon. To make the narrative more compelling, a potential solution could be to create a show centered around Palpatine’s origins and conflicts during his reign as Emperor. For such a storyline to work effectively, the Dark Lord of the Sith would require a formidable adversary with connections to both time periods.

Instead of Yoda being the central character due to his strength as the most powerful Jedi during Palpatine’s lifetime, it could have been Mace Windu who took the spotlight. With a lingering grudge against the Emperor, Windu’s story could have unfolded in the early years at the Jedi Temple. The series might also delve into how he survived the events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith,” seeking vengeance for his fallen comrades. Exploring how both characters evolved and eventually clashed again would have created intriguing TV content. Regrettably, the show never materialized, leaving uncertain the fate of Mace Windu, portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson.

Mace Windu Is Running Out of Places to Make His Return to Star Wars

Since the release of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” in 2005, speculations about Mace Windu’s survival have been abundant, with strong points such as a Jedi Master like him wouldn’t succumb to a simple fall. However, despite fan and Samuel L. Jackson’s persistent demands, there has been no confirmation of his return to live-action. Even Bryce Dallas Howard, who works with Lucasfilm on their Disney+ series, seems unable to provide a definitive answer regarding Windu’s future. The challenge lies in the fact that Star Wars seems to be transitioning away from the prequel era, with most upcoming films and shows set either after “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” or after “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.” This leaves little opportunity for a character born a few decades prior to “The Phantom Menace.

It’s plausible that Lucasfilm could reconsider and delve deeper into the prequel timeline once more, but it currently seems unlikely. This implies that if the Palpatine series doesn’t resurface, it’s likely that Mace Windu will stay deceased permanently.
