There’s some exciting news that’s just come out for fans of the One Chicago universe. However, this fantastic news is accompanied by a condition to be aware of.
According to recent announcements, NBC has decided to renew all three of their “One Chicago” shows for the 2025-26 television schedule. This means we’ll see more of “Chicago Fire” in Season 14, “Chicago P.D.” in Season 13, and “Chicago Med” in Season 11. Although it’s not entirely surprising given their ongoing success, the renewals still bring a sense of excitement, as they’re never completely certain. The shows have been dominating NBC ratings and attracting large numbers on Peacock streaming service as well. So far this season, the “One Chicago” franchise has collectively garnered nearly 46 million total viewers across NBC broadcasts and streaming.
Unfortunately, there’s a hiccup regarding the good news about the shows being renewed. The renewal report indicates that further discussions are needed between NBC and Universal Television concerning budget matters. These discussions led to budget reductions for the One Chicago shows. It’s common practice in television, especially as veteran shows increase in cost with time, to make such cuts. There are speculations that one method of saving costs might involve lessening the appearance of some regular cast members in each episode.
Normally, series regulars see a decrease of two episodes each due to budget constraints. However, it’s said that this time around, several cast members might miss between 2-4 episodes. Furthermore, the actors on the One Chicago shows have been requested to establish residency in Illinois; those who don’t will probably face further episode reductions. Also, there are expectations that they’ll forgo their annual 5% salary increase. Lastly, the upcoming seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med are predicted to have a lower total episode count overall.
In my perspective as a movie enthusiast, it seems that the series is not quite set, with key actors’ contracts still under negotiation. This uncertainty brings about the possibility of some unexpected departures from our favorite cast members. Fortunately, at this moment, there’s no clear indication that anyone is planning to leave. Fingers crossed, as I understand they are engaged in discussions regarding new agreements. Let’s wait and see what unfolds!
Wednesday Nights are One Chicago Nights on NBC
These three shows – Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. – have been instrumental in NBC’s success on broadcast television. A unique crossover event in January boosted each show to record-breaking season ratings, suggesting that there may be more collaborations in the future, given their renewals. Every Wednesday night, the shows begin at 8 PM with Chicago Med, followed by Chicago Fire at 9 PM and Chicago P.D. at 10 PM.
