Lauryn’s accessories were a tribute to this year’s Met Gala theme “Superior Finery: Elevating Black Tailoring,” which focused on 18th-century fashion as explored in Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves of Fashion: The Influence of Black Dandyism on the Expression of Black Diasporic Identity.

In my perspective as a lifestyle aficionado, I’ve found that this occasion provides us with a unique chance and stage to honor the truly extraordinary, potent hue of Black. Herein lies an opportunity for us to commemorate not just the color, but the people – Black people, in particular – and we’re doing so through the elegant style known as dandyism.
