Spoilers for One Golden Summer ahead.
This summer is already radiant, not only due to Carley Fortune delving once more into Barry’s Bay, where she pens Charlie Florek’s long-awaited joyous conclusion in “One Golden Summer” (now available). However, when it came to encapsulating the essence of Charlie and Alice Everly’s lakeside romance into a fitting title for her new book, she found herself at a loss.
In an exclusive interview with TopMob News, Fortune shared that they found it particularly challenging to decide on a title for their latest novel. They mentioned that among all the books they’ve worked on, this one proved to be the most difficult to name.
Her editor Amanda Bergeronâs solution? Let the music of Harry Styles guide them.
According to the author, Amanda exclaimed, “You adore Harry Styles, don’t you? I’ll be channeling Harry Styles,” as she reminisced. She was simply glancing over his song titles and lyrics when she said something along the lines of, “something, something about gold.
She exclaimed with delight, “What a fitting title! ‘Golden’ suits this book perfectly,” she said. That’s how the novel One Golden Summer was born. Thus, we owe it all to Mr. Styles.
In my experience as a lifestyle guide, I find that “golden” isn’t merely an apt description for the enchanting radiance of the sunset lake scene, so often captured in Fortune’s writings, but it also beautifully encapsulates the transformative nature of Charlie and Alice’s love story following their heartache.
Instead of saying: After all, newly single Alice escapes Toronto for Barry’s Bayâwhere she spent an enchanting summer in her teenage yearsâclaiming it’s to aid her grandmother who had a hip injury. Here comes Charlie, as captivating as ever. Eventually, their bond deepens into something beyond friendship, despite Charlie maintaining that he’s just not cut out for romantic relationships.
Alice, now single, leaves Toronto behind and heads to Barry’s Bay, a place she fondly remembers from her teenage summers, under the pretense of helping her grandmother who had fallen and hurt her hip. Enter Charlie, as charming as always. Before long, their friendship morphs into something more meaningful, despite Charlie repeatedly stating that he doesn’t do relationships.
Fortune stressed the importance of being authentic with everyone, saying, ‘When you find someone who truly resonates with you, whether it’s a close friend or a romantic partner, that connection is unique. It allows you to be yourself fully around them, and that’s something they both have.’
In this captivating turn of events, it opened up an exceptional chance for me, as a devoted follower, to delve further into Charlie’s narrative â uncovering the aftermath of the breath-taking occurrences in the novel “Every Summer After“, where Charlie’s younger brother Sam found himself smitten with the neighbor girl Percy.
As a lifestyle expert, let me share my personal thoughts on this captivating subject. In 2022, the release of “Charlie” left an indelible impression on my mind, and it continued to resonate with me for several years thereafter. At various events I attended, readers would approach me, their eyes gleaming with anticipation, expressing a fervent wish that Charlie’s story culminated in a heartwarming resolution.
After publishing “Meet Me at the Lake” and “This Summer Will Be Different,” she had a brief hiatus from writing about Barry’s Bay. However, now that she felt prepared, it was time for her to return to her roots – the Ontario lake community being the place where she spent her childhood, thus inspiring her novel.
In a different perspective, “Ever Summer After” portrays Charlie masking his true self for most of the story, a persona he adopted as the jester within the family. Conversely, “One Golden Summer” delves into how, as the eldest brother, Charlie bore the weight of his family’s struggles well into his adult life.
This becomes particularly poignant when we consider Charlie, who, being 35 years old, is the same age as his father was at the time of his unexpected death. He is not just facing this heart-wrenching milestone, but also grappling with a personal health struggle of his own.
In a thoughtful remark, Fortune expressed that he deeply desired to accompany Charlie, as they shared a perspective on living and appreciating life’s blessings. This sentiment can be observed in the novel “Every Summer After” as well, where Charlie often grows agitated with his brother, feeling that he is not appreciative of what he possesses. At this moment in time, Charlie is grappling with mortality due to his circumstances.
She went on to say, ‘He truly values his time on Earth.’ Living here isn’t always simple, yet we each have just one chance at it. To me, that’s a big part of what makes him who he is.
It’s understood that some readers might find issue with Charlie’s past involvement with Percy, and “One Golden Summer” doesn’t aim to excuse them for their indiscretion.
As a lifestyle expert, I often find myself reflecting on the experiences of others, such as Percy and Charlie who faced scrutiny for their past actions during their teenage years. It’s essential to remember that everyone makes mistakes, and these missteps don’t define us. Instead, they serve as opportunities for growth, learning, and self-improvement. This book I’ve written aims to encourage readers to ponder the reasons behind our errors, understand their impact on us, and embrace the idea that we are more than our mistakes.
She emphasized, “Although I don’t aim to convert opinions about Charlie, I delight in learning when someone has shifted their perspective. He has been my most enjoyable character to develop, and I’ve always felt there were deeper layers to him, so it was rewarding to delve into those aspects.
In the story “Every Summer After“, Percy and Sam find themselves reunited. By the end of another heartwarming summer titled “One Golden Summer“, we learn that they not only got married but are also eagerly awaiting the arrival of a baby girl. As Fortune expressed, it was delightful to provide readers with a glimpse into their tranquil life after the tense events of the original story.
One Golden Summer is out now. For more new books, keep reading.

Backman is an author you can’t afford to miss, and for good reason. In his latest novel, “My Friends“, he masterfully interweaves two timelines. The story revolves around a transformative summer for a group of teenagers and an artist who, 25 years later, finds herself captivated by a painting that depicts three of her old friends. In typical Backman style, it’s a moving, sometimes poignant exploration of life, loss, and the people who support us through it all.
