Gran Turismo has, for decades now, been an outstanding racing game.
Perhaps the key factor behind the franchise’s triumph lies in its unique blend of realism and accessibility – it manages to deliver a realistic simulation experience, yet remains easy for players to grasp.
Compared to advanced racing simulations such as iRacing, Gran Turismo may not measure up; however, it manages to remain realistic while still being approachable for a broader, less experienced audience.
The wrinkle could potentially be attributed to Shuhei Yoshida, former head of PS Studios, who served as a producer during the development of the original game for PS1 while under PlayStation.
Back in the initial stages of the original PlayStation, Kazunori Yamauchi was busy crafting the inaugural installment of Gran Turismo, as he shared with PlayStation Insider.
Recall the game’s cover mentioning it as ‘the authentic driving simulator’. During its creation, Yamauchi demonstrated an early version of Gran Turismo to me, making me one of the initial players.
Initially, the game was astonishingly complex, maybe even too challenging. At first, Kazunori Yamauchi didn’t fully grasp my criticism, so he assembled approximately 30 gamers to test the title. As I had anticipated, none of them could successfully navigate the game at its initial stage due to its high level of difficulty.
Yamauchi and I were situated at the back of the room. At this moment, Yamauchi turned to me and acknowledged that I was correct. After that, he began wrapping up things, softening the intense simulation element slightly to create the Gran Turismo we recognize today for the PS1.
I feel quite proud to believe that I contributed, in a small but significant way, to the outcome where Gran Turismo thrived rather than faltered, and to its ultimate success!
The series eventually became one of PlayStation’s enduring and widely-loved titles, with Gran Turismo 7, its newest edition, continuing to get fresh content every month even now.
