As the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues to grow, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to follow its vast array of characters. Some may not return after their appearances, as the MCU chooses to focus on certain heroes, villains, and others while letting go of some stories or even ending them altogether. This is particularly evident as we approach Avengers: Doomsday, Avengers: Secret Wars, and a potential new phase. While fans may be pleased to see certain characters from less successful projects disappear from the MCU’s future, others might be disappointing. Regardless, it’s important to note that not every character from previous MCU phases will make a comeback.
The following five MCU characters are most likely gone from the franchise forever.
G’iah
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my thoughts about the character of G’iah from the Secret Invasion series on Disney+. The show’s reception was less than stellar, which seems to have left Marvel with a strong desire to erase it from fans’ memories as much as possible. G’iah, played by Emilia Clarke, was introduced as a significant character in Secret Invasion, being the Skrull refugee and daughter of Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). By the end of the series, she had become one of the MCU’s most powerful characters, boasting abilities equivalent to its mightiest heroes.
This setup for G’iah’s future was intriguing, but unfortunately, Marvel has yet to reveal any plans for her next appearance. While nothing is confirmed, fans should not hold their breath in anticipation of Clarke’s return as G’iah. It appears that the MCU’s recent content crackdown may have put her and other characters introduced in Secret Invasion, like Olivia Colman’s Sonya Falsworth, on ice for now.
The Eternals
2021’s film “The Eternals” seemed to be victims of a project that didn’t quite hit the mark with critics, despite having stunning visuals and an exciting new cast of superheroes. At the time, it was the only MCU movie to receive a “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet, whispers of a sequel persisted after its release, but now, it appears that the Eternals may have been left out of future Marvel Cinematic Universe plans permanently. In July 2024, Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, announced that there are currently no plans for “Eternals 2,” effectively putting an end to any hopes of seeing the group again.
1. The demise of characters like Richard Madden’s Ikaris, Salma Hayek’s Ajak, and Don Lee’s Gilgamesh in Eternals marked their departures from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it seems unlikely that other surviving characters such as Gemma Chan’s Sersei, Angelina Jolie’s Thena, Barry Keoghan’s Druig will appear elsewhere. In the post-credits scene of Eternals, Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman discovers the Ebony Blade, which awakens the voice of Mahershala Ali’s Blade. This hint seems to be leading nowhere, as Ali’s solo Blade film has been indefinitely postponed. Similarly, the debut of Harry Styles as Thanos’ brother Eros/Starfox appears to have stalled.
2. In the movie Eternals, the deaths of characters like Richard Madden’s Ikaris, Salma Hayek’s Ajak, and Don Lee’s Gilgamesh signified their exit from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and it appears that other surviving characters such as Gemma Chan’s Sersei, Angelina Jolie’s Thena, Barry Keoghan’s Druig will not be seen again. In a post-credits scene in Eternals, Kit Harrington’s Dane Whitman finds the Ebony Blade, which brings to life Mahershala Ali’s Blade. However, this hint seems to lead nowhere as Ali’s standalone Blade film has been pushed back indefinitely. Similarly, Harry Styles’ introduction as Thanos’ brother Eros/Starfox appears to have hit a roadblock.
Sharon Carter
Initially introduced in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” (2014) and given a minor role in “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), Emily VanCamp’s character Sharon Carter, Peggy Carter’s grand-niece, has an interesting backstory. She worked for Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D before moving to the CIA. In the recent Disney+ show “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” (2021), Sharon was seen living a new life as a black market art dealer in Madripoor, eventually returning to the CIA under the guise of the Power Broker. However, her absence from the cast of “Captain America: Brave New World” raises questions about her future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With no confirmed upcoming projects offering a plausible return for Sharon, it seems her storyline in the MCU may have come to an end for now.
Karl Mordo
2016’s “Doctor Strange” brought Chiwetel Ejiofor into the role of Karl Mordo, an accomplished member of the Mystic Arts council. However, by the end of the film, Mordo chose to leave the sorcerer coalition. The closing credits scene hinted at Mordo embarking on a new crusade aimed at eradicating all magic-users worldwide. Since then, the primary MCU version of Mordo has not reappeared; instead, 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” introduced an alternate Mordo who was part of Earth-838’s Illuminati.
It turns out that in the original plan for “Multiverse of Madness”, Mordo was supposed to be killed by the Scarlet Witch, but this death scene was ultimately cut. Consequently, Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character, Mordo, is still alive. However, the omission of this scene may imply that the MCU had no further plans for Mordo at the time. Nevertheless, the possibility of Mordo reappearing in “Doctor Strange 3” exists, but the lack of development for his character after the post-credits scene in “Doctor Strange” suggests that his storyline might have concluded, at least for now.
Kang the Conqueror
As a devoted Marvel fan, I’ve been closely following the developments within the MCU. After the unfortunate events involving Jonathan Majors in 2024, his character faced consequences, effectively ending his journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This multiversal villain, who was set to become the next formidable adversary, had been teased in projects like Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, Majors’ actions off-set and the less-than-stellar reception of Quantumania led to the cancellation of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, making way for Avengers: Doomsday instead. In this new storyline, we’ll see Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom stepping into the role of the MCU’s next major villain. It’s unclear whether the MCU will delve into Kang’s in-universe resolution or if his narrative will be left unresolved following Loki Season 2. For now, fans can expect neither a return from Majors as Kang nor a recast of the character in the near future.
The MCU’s newest movie, Thunderbolts*, is now playing in theaters.
