Call the Midwife Shocks Fans With Spin-Off Series, Movie & Christmas Specials Revealed!

Exciting update for “Call the Midwife” enthusiasts! Not only has filming started on a two-part Christmas special scheduled for 2025 and a 15th season slated for 2026, but there are also two intriguing projects linked to the show currently in development.

The initial offering is a pre-war series, titled “Poplar Chronicles,” scheduled to debut on the BBC next year, taking place during World War II in the town of Poplar.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that alongside the ongoing projects, we have another exciting addition in the pipeline – a new installment of ‘Call the Midwife’. This time, it will depart our shores and be set abroad, in the year 1972. Some of the beloved characters from the original series are expected to make an appearance, promising an unforgettable journey.

Each of these projects is currently being penned and filmed by creator Heidi Thomas, along with executive producers Pippa Harris and Ann Tricklebank. Additionally, preparations for season 16 of the primary series are underway as well.

Thomas expressed in his statement that the opening of new doors at Nonnatus House seems deeply moving, and yet it feels completely appropriate.

I always have new stories for our midwives, and I always will. However, after experiencing a range of emotions from crying, laughing, and getting angry between the years 1957 and 1971, I felt a strong desire to explore the more distant past.

In the East End during the Blitz years, things were extraordinary – a mix of heartache, unity, bravery, and happiness. Bombs dropped, yet life continued with newborns arriving, and the Sisters persevered. The upcoming prequel promises a lot for our dedicated fans, featuring some familiar (though significantly younger!) characters.

As the beloved characters from Call the Midwife venture deeper into the 1970s, it feels fitting for them to momentarily step away from Poplar and explore a new, challenging environment, testing their resilience.

As a devoted admirer, I must express my thoughts about the surge in hospital births and the transformations within the NHS. These events have temporarily grounded them, but now, they’ve got their opportunity to soar! It’s high time they discover their true priorities. Although the location of the upcoming film is shrouded in mystery, let me assure you, it will be a visual spectacle when it graces our big screens!

In the upcoming 2025 Christmas specials and Season 15, it’s been disclosed that some key personnel from Nonnatus House embark on a humanitarian journey to Hong Kong. This leaves the junior midwives to manage on their own.

Throughout Series 15, the holiday atmosphere oscillates between the brightly lit Far East and a wintry East End. Suddenly, Sister Julienne exhibits an infectious enthusiasm about the Order’s future. After decades of resisting change, she chooses to welcome it, collaborate with it, and explore what love can achieve. This shift in energy permeates the entire series.

The fresh installment commences in 1971, with some of the characters adopting Women’s Liberation and symbolically discarding their bras outside Nonnatus House. Throughout the year, we witness the team dealing with various scenarios such as premature birth, placenta previa, kidney cancer, tuberculosis, and instances of slavery.

For the upcoming season 15, it’s been made official that regular cast members like Judy Parfitt, Jenny Agutter, Laura Main, Helen George, Cliff Parisi, Stephen McGann, Linda Bassett, Annabelle Apsion, Georgie Glen, Zephryn Taitte, Rebecca Gethings, Daniel Laurie, Renee Bailey, Natalie Quarry, Molly Vevers, Max Macmillan, Alice Brown, April Rae Hoang, and Edward Shaw will all be returning.

In an interview earlier this year with TopMob magazine, Thomas hinted at potential growth for our beloved series by saying, “We discover chances to broaden our storytelling universe,” yet added a note of cautious optimism with the mention that it “may need a brief rest at some juncture.” Fortunately, it seems we’re in for continued adventures without any immediate hiatus.
