Charlie Cox initially showed minimal enthusiasm for Marvel’s interpretation of “Inside Man.” However, the reboot of “Daredevil” by Marvel Studios experienced a significant transformation in 2023. This change occurred during a Hollywood writers’ strike that halted production on what was planned as an 18-episode debut season for “Daredevil: Born Again.”
By the time Marvel recruited Dario Scardapane (from “The Punisher”) as showrunner and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (“Loki”) as director-producers to revise, reshoot, or otherwise alter the series, only one episode from the original script by Chris Ord and Matt Corman remained: “With Interest.
The fifth episode of the season, which consists of nine episodes in total, is set primarily within New York Mutual Bank on Saint Patrick’s Day. It was directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, who has previously worked on Hostages, and written by Grainne Godfree, a writer for the Arrowverse series The Flash.
In this scenario, character Matt Murdock, portrayed by Cox, visits the assistant manager of a bank, Yusef Khan (Mohan Kapur who previously played him in Ms. Marvel and The Marvels), to discuss a loan for his law firm. However, the bank becomes a target when Devlin (Cillian O’Sullivan) and a group of masked thugs, working under the crime boss Luca (Patrick Murney), aim to steal a $1.8 million diamond intended to settle debts with another criminal named Viktor (Gino Anthony Pesi). Despite not donning his Daredevil costume, Matt manages to save the hostages and thwart the bank robbery by utilizing his extraordinary senses as a blind man.
In one aspect of the major revamp, there was an episode we left untouched. This is the bank episode, which was part of the initial production, Cox explained to The Playlist. “We filmed that before the strike,” he added. “It was part of the original and, in my opinion, I wasn’t fond of it. It was my least favorite of the episodes, and I resisted it as much as I thought was appropriate.
Cox stated, ‘I’m skeptical about a bank robbery in 2025. It seems more like a 1970s plot. With all the advanced technology nowadays, it just doesn’t seem feasible.’ Furthermore, he doubted the complexity of the tool used for the supposed theft.
This episode received an 8.0 rating on IMDb and a 92% approval from 12 critics’ reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics appreciated it as a lively, self-contained episode, finding it enjoyable and fun. As one critic noted, “Born Again” was initially intended to be less serialized with more independent episodes. Episode 5 seems to retain elements of that original concept, offering a largely standalone installment focused on a single event where Daredevil comes to the rescue.
Cox commented, “Despite my strong opposition to the episode, I’m constantly told by many viewers that they adore it. This just proves how unpredictable taste can be. Everyone has unique preferences, and I’ve even learned that this episode is among the most popular. In fact, when they assess ratings internally, it consistently ranks as one of Disney’s highest-rated shows.
The initial season 1, consisting of 18 episodes, has been condensed into nine episodes. Prior to the eight-episode season 2 airing on Disney+ in March 2026, a special presentation titled The Punisher will be released. With Scardapane involved from the beginning, Cox stated, “I don’t want to exaggerate. I genuinely believe it’s some of the finest writing our show has ever seen.
I’ve heard that comment from everyone before, but let me tell you, I reached out to Dario, the showrunner recently and said something like, ‘Given we’re still in the middle of filming, I must give a massive shoutout to what you’ve accomplished so far.’ He’s really impressed me because he’s given more depth to characters that were overlooked in the previous version of the show. As a result, it feels like the cast is working together more than ever.
The entire season 1 of the series “Daredevil: Born Again,” featuring Charlie Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Margarita Levieva, Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, Wilson Bethel, Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, Ayelet Zurer, and Jon Bernthal, can be streamed on Disney+.
