Tina Knowles Reunites with Ex-Husband Mathew During Book Tour

Tina Knowles put on a united front with her ex-husband Mathew Knowles.

On May 5th, during her “Matriarch” book tour stop at the Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, Houston, Texas, a surprising guest made an appearance – none other than the 71-year-old author herself, accompanied by moderator Kelly Rowland.

Once the record executive, who is the father of both Beyoncé and Solange Knowles (and also shares daughters with Tina), settled into his chair, the author gratefully acknowledged his presence in joining her.

Tina, who was married to Matthew from 1980 to 2011, stated in a TikTok video that a fan recorded, “Neither of us has spoken ill of each other, not once, and I’ve never done that. I said, ‘You know what we could do to demonstrate this strong bond? You should join me on stage.'”.

At the event, Matthew and Tina discussed their shared efforts in supporting their daughters and boosting the achievement of Destiny’s Child. Showcasing their close relationship, Matthew affectionately led Tina and Kelly to the stage’s front while offering words of motivation to the audience, followed by a heartfelt hug for both ladies before leaving.

Last week, the music tycoon made a show of support following his public congratulations for Tina, who joyfully responded to her achievement of reaching number one on the New York Times Bestseller list after the publication of her book.

In a post dated May 1st, Matthew, aged 73, congratulated Tina on her number one New York Times bestseller ‘Matriarch’, which she was holding in a photo. He wrote, “Tina, well done on your top-selling book ‘Matriarch.’ Matthew.

After a three-decade marriage ended due to Matthew’s infidelity, Tina shared that, having healed for many years, she now finds herself in a positive state with her former spouse.

Tina noted during the April 24th episode of Sirius XM’s ‘Gayle King in the House’ podcast that our relationship is strong because we have accomplished great things together. She said, ‘We’ve done some fantastic work.’

She went on to say, “It’s been quite some time since then, and I’ve repeated myself numerous times. Yes, there were extremely challenging, difficult periods with Matthew, yet I never had any doubts about his affection for me or the children.

In Tina Knowles’ 2025 book “Matriarch”, she shared that she felt apprehensive when Solange Knowles became pregnant at 17, fearing she was too young for the responsibilities of motherhood. Despite this, Tina supported Solange’s choice to keep her baby, but advised against rushing into marriage. She also attempted to persuade Daniel Smith, the baby’s father, to encourage Solange to postpone the wedding for a while.

Daniel “phoned us again, sounding upset,” Tina penned down. “[Solange] retorted, ‘I hate you, and I hate my mother, and I hate Angie [BeyoncĂ©, Tina’s niece], because I know they’re behind this.’ Solange ended the call abruptly, then vanished for two days. We were terrified, and even though disappearing was something Solange often did, I was furious.

Solange gave birth to Julez Smith and tied the knot with Daniel in 2004, surrounded by loved ones. However, their marriage ended in 2007 through a divorce.

Talking about Angie Beyince, it’s interesting to note that she took on this surname because Tina and her siblings each had unique spellings of their last name. Tina’s official birth name was recorded as “Celestine Ann BeyoncĂ©” on her birth certificate.

Reflecting on “Matriarch,” it was the desire within me to make a change that Tina stirred. One evening, as I sat beside my brother Larry while he tackled his homework, I expressed my wish to practice writing my own name. He graciously lent me his pencil and guided me through each letter. When we reached the final letters of my last name, Larry needed a moment to recall it.

In my recent musings, I found myself reflecting on the unique variations of our shared family surname, Buyince. It was a fascinating discovery, as it manifested in many forms: Beyince, Boyance, and, of course, BeyoncĂ© – each of us bearing our distinct imprint.

When she insisted that her mother AgnĂ©z take action regarding her incorrectly spelled birth certificate, Tina went on to say, “I was told, ‘Just be grateful for getting a birth certificate.’ This is significant because, at one point in history, Black people were not even issued birth certificates.” Furthermore, AgnĂ©z commented, “‘Your name is lovely.’

It’s clear that the name stuck with her since she named her firstborn BeyoncĂ©. As Tina put it, “The spelling didn’t matter when I received it; it was our name, our history. The most precious thing I owned, and now I could pass it on. I continue to preserve the legacy.

Before their daughter Blue Ivy Carter was born in 2012, BeyoncĂ© endured several miscarriages alongside Jay-Z. The baseless claims spread by malicious individuals that she had fabricated her pregnancy and her baby bump wasn’t genuine infuriated Tina immensely.

In a written message, Tina expressed, “That was some of the most foolish behavior,” or simply, “They were incredibly foolish.” She went on to say she felt strongly about voicing her frustration towards certain individuals and letting them know they were wrong. These people, in her opinion, had no understanding of the struggles that Tina, Jay, and their family had endured. This incident was one of the most difficult times for Tina, as BeyoncĂ© had forbidden her from speaking publicly about it.

In hindsight, she thinks Beyoncé was right not to dignify any of the bogus stories with a response.

Even though she could handle various tasks, as a mother, persistent gossip leaves Tina feeling powerless, unable to safeguard her kids. There isn’t much she can do regarding rumors; they seem beyond her reach.

Tina expressed that her relationship with Mathew Knowles, BeyoncĂ© and Solange’s father, was excellent most of the time in a note she wrote. However, despite the deep, spiritual connection they shared, there were times when Mathew’s unpredictable actions became a challenge.

She went on to explain, “He’d either misbehave or be unfaithful, and I’d reach my limit. He’d repent, weeping and vowing to change. Yet, the same issue would recur.” Tina penned, “However, I convinced myself that this was just what married couples went through.” In simpler terms, she said, “He’d mess up, then apologize and promise to improve, but the problem would resurface again. I thought it was just a part of being married.

Tina had doubts about managing independently as she hadn’t held a job since becoming a mother, pondering, “What would happen if I chose to leave him?

By the point Tina was expecting Solange (born in 1986), she had penned that her marriage was disintegrating at a pace quicker than she could devise solutions or excuses to save it – even with the pregnancy. Matthew’s infidelity became so glaringly apparent that I couldn’t continue the marriage.

As a lifestyle consultant, I’d say, “Matthew was an exceptional father, but there were certain challenges that made it difficult for us to maintain a harmonious marriage at the time.

In reaction to assumptions that certain poignant lines in “Lemonade” might be about his daughter, BeyoncĂ©’s father, Matthew, expressed that he too is left guessing, just like everyone else.

He mentioned to Mark Thompson during an interview on SiriusXM’s “Make It Plain” in April 2016 that he wasn’t sure whom BeyoncĂ© was talking about throughout her entire series. However, he proudly stated that she had truly pushed the boundaries of creativity with this HBO special.

When directly questioned about the first chapter, titled “Intuition”, which reads, “You remind me of my father, a magician. Able to exist in two places at once. In the lineage of men in my blood, you come home at 3 a.m. and lie to me” – Matthew responded that he had no particular response to it.

“I know the response you want to get,” he told Mark. “You’re not going to get that response.”

In the year 2009, Tina decided to end her 29-year-long marriage when she discovered that her husband had fathered a child with someone else.

In the novel “Matriarch” of the Going Apes series, she wrote that this situation was unlike any other time she decided to depart from him. This time, she had no alternative. On October 2, 2009, when Matthew received paternity papers, BeyoncĂ© was being recognized as Billboard’s Woman of the Year. Following the chaos caused by that event, she continued with her life at a steady pace and had been doing so for years, adhering to her routine and letting her work serve as a means to distract and support her.

However, Matthew persisted in winning her over, and as he did so, I discovered myself falling in love all over again.

Which is how she ended up in a situationship with her own spouse.

Tina wrote that she didn’t want to tell their daughters BeyoncĂ© and Solange about the situation, knowing that they would be upset if they discovered we had reconciled.

On Mother’s Day in 2010, when the children unexpectedly arrived at Tina’s house, they quickly figured it out. Bey, the eldest, gave a serious nod, as Tina recorded, whereas Solange reacted exuberantly due to her protective feelings.

In Tina’s words, “Each of them expressed love for their father uniquely, and at times, I felt as though my youngest daughter mirrored him so closely that his setbacks resonated profoundly within her.

In 2011, the divorce proceedings between Mathew and his previous partner were resumed and concluded. He got married to Gena Knowles in 2013, and he’s a father to two children – a son and daughter born in 2010, each with different ex-partners.

Tina went on to marry Richard Lawson in 2015 but filed for divorce in 2023.

Unlike with her first husband, however, Tina’s second marriage didn’t end over some big betrayal.

In the book “Matriarch,” she shared that she and Richard had been friends for numerous years prior to their 10-year relationship. She noted that he possessed wonderful qualities, but those qualities didn’t manifest between them. At age 69, she came to understand that she deserved far more than what they had. Her desire was to be content, to bring joy to someone when they entered a room.

Tina wrote that she made the decision to divorce Richard “totally without malice.”

In 2024, when Tina was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer, not only did BeyoncĂ©, Solange, Angie, and Kelly Rowland visit her at the hospital, but BeyoncĂ© also took Tina home with her and kept in touch with her mom’s doctor.

Tina mentioned that Beyoncé had her move into her home for the purpose of monitoring her recovery, which is akin to how either my mother or I would handle such a situation.
