As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news from the world of entertainment! The Walt Disney Company has just unveiled a significant move that won’t break their bank upfront. They are partnering with Miral to establish a fresh theme park and resort on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, marking Disney’s seventh global theme park resort.
Unlike the company’s massive $60 billion investment plan for its other parks, this project is being funded by someone else, making it a strategic expansion with minimal immediate financial commitment from Disney. This collaboration promises a magical experience for families worldwide, further solidifying Disney’s position as a leader in family entertainment. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting venture!
In a statement issued on Wednesday, it was announced that Miral, the company responsible for Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, will finance and build the upcoming resort entirely. The creative direction and operation oversight will be led by Disney Imagineers. This implies that Disney will not invest any capital into the project; instead, they’ll receive royalties once the park begins operations.

Bob Iger, Disney’s CEO, expressed great excitement about a significant development for our company: we’re planning to construct a captivating Disney theme park resort in Abu Dhabi. Known for its deep-rooted love for the arts and creativity, this city will be our seventh destination. This new park, when built, will showcase a harmonious blend of modern architecture and advanced technology, ensuring visitors have unforgettable, immersive entertainment experiences that are both innovative and contemporary.
It’s been confirmed by Iger that Imagineers have begun planning for the park, but no specific opening date or timeframe has been disclosed yet. This decision was made following Disney’s strong Q2 financial performance, which saw a 6% increase in their experiences division, encompassing parks, cruises, resorts, and consumer products.

Through this venture, Disney isn’t directly funding it, but they are expanding their global influence into an area with a thriving tourism industry. In fact, about one-third of the world’s population resides within a four-hour flight radius of the United Arab Emirates, and Disney estimates that potential audience for this venture could be as high as 500 million travelers.
Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, called the project “a new frontier.”
D’Amaro stated that this innovative resort is a pioneering step in the evolution of theme park construction. The resort in Abu Dhabi will be the most technologically advanced and interactive destination within our collection. Being situated on a stunning waterfront, it provides us with an opportunity to narrate our stories in unprecedented ways. This venture will extend Disney’s reach to a new region globally, inviting more families than ever to immerse themselves in the Disney experience.

On Yas Island, entertainment giants abound, boasting attractions like Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World, the F1 Yas Marina Circuit, and a colossal shopping mall. Now, a Disney resort is set to be added, with the company avoiding the financial risk of construction.
The park is going to offer themed accommodations, interactive dining, and shopping adventures that blend Disney narratives with the unique cultural and architectural aspects of Abu Dhabi.
The artwork unveiled in conjunction with the announcement presents an unparalleled, forward-thinking urban landscape unlike any Disney park constructed so far. Nestled along a radiant turquoise shoreline, this depiction encompasses grand architecture, colossal crystalline spires, lush vegetation entwined with meandering waterways and illuminated paths. The standout structure – a shimmering, towering edifice at the heart – bears no semblance to any castle or recognizable Disney symbol. Rather, its design embraces abstract forms and ultra-modern aesthetics, evoking images of a futuristic metropolis over fantasy classics.

Conspicuously missing are the usual Disney elements, like castles, mountains, or reminiscences of Main Street USA. Instead, it appears more like an exclusive retreat designed to awe dignitaries and the affluent, rather than evoking nostalgia or character-driven magic for loyal fans. This change represents a daring shift, and it’s sure to generate discussion among traditional Disney park enthusiasts.
The announcement could indicate a change in Disney’s global approach: they will no longer construct billion-dollar theme parks without a co-investor. Although Disney is still growing its own parks, such as those in Florida, California, and abroad, the Abu Dhabi deal allows them to maintain financial stability while exploring new audiences.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the subtle yet significant moves Disney has been making in the UAE. Shows like “The Lion King” on Broadway and “Disney on Ice” have graced their stages here, and the growth of retail presence hints at something bigger. This new park seems to be the natural next step in Disney’s expansion strategy for this region.

However, this situation leads us to ponder another point: If Disney is no longer pouring funds into its own theme parks, could this be an indication that the magic has shifted towards licensing agreements? Essentially, it seems they’re more focused on decorating rather than building the house, and some might argue their recent design choices haven’t been particularly impressive.
For now, we wait. But one thing’s clear—Disney’s cashing in on the brand, not the experience.
