Joe Biden Finally Speaks: Why He Dropped Out of 2024 Race

President Joe Biden has no regrets.

In a recent conversation, held for the first time since leaving the White House in January, the 82-year-old discussed the reasons behind his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. This withdrawal paved the way for Vice President Kamala Harris to take up the challenge against President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

Reflecting on the past, Biden, who ended his campaign in July, believes that handing over the leadership role any sooner wouldn’t have altered the final result, where Trump eventually defeated Harris.

In the interview with the BBC on May 7, he expressed that the outcome wouldn’t have been different. They departed when they had a strong candidate who was well-funded. However, what took place was beyond expectations – no one believed we could accomplish it. Yet, with our agenda, we achieved such success that it became challenging to halt our progress at that point.

Biden further explained, “When I initially spoke, I meant what I said about passing on the reins to the next administration, orchestrating a smooth transition of power. However, events progressed rapidly, making it challenging for me to step aside. It was a tough choice to make.

Despite the challenging nature of his choice, he stands firm by his decision to withdraw from the race, expressing his satisfaction by saying, “I believe it was the correct decision” and admitting, “It was indeed a tough call.

Approximately a year ago, the 46th President announced his decision to withdraw from the race. Later, Vice President Kamala Harris took over with Tim Walz as her running mate.

In his social media post in July, Biden expressed that serving as your President has been the most significant honor of his life. Originally planning to run for reelection, he now feels it’s more beneficial for his party and the nation if he steps aside and focuses only on completing his presidential duties for the rest of his term.

In a follow-up message, the Democrat urged his party to choose Harris as his replacement.

To my fellow Democrats, I have chosen not to take up the nomination and instead dedicate all my efforts to fulfilling my responsibilities as President for the rest of my term,” he revealed. “My first choice in 2020, when I became the party’s nominee, was Kamala Harris as my Vice President, and it has proven to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

But despite losing to Trump and running mate JD Vance, Harris expressed her hopes for the future.  

In her November concession speech, Harris expressed that she is deeply appreciative for the faith you have shown in her, filled with affection for our nation, and determined. She acknowledged that the election results were not what we desired, were not what we struggled for, nor what we voted for, but emphasized that the American dream’s light will continue to shine bright as long as we never lose hope and remain persistent in our struggles.

60-year-old [person] has largely stayed out of sight since Trump’s inauguration, but Harris is gradually reemerging in public view. For instance, she recently made a surprise visit to this year’s Met Gala on May 5, accompanied by her husband, Doug Emhoff, to honor the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” theme.
