If you’re planning to take on the Master difficulty level in the remastered version of ‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’, and you prefer playing as a Paladin, then our character build guide is tailor-made for you!
Paladins are typically brave and righteous fighters. They can draw upon their spiritual strength to boost themselves in battle, making it easier for them to defeat their enemies. Although Oblivion might not possess “holy powers”, you can still play a character that fulfills the role of a Paladin quite effectively.
Read on for our full Paladin build guide for Master difficulty.
Complete Paladin Guide Master Mode | The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
First of all, let’s go over the selections to make during character creation:
- Race – Breton with the Systres origin for Strength.
- Specialization – Combat.
- Favored Attributes – Strength and Intelligence. Focus on Strength, Intelligence, Willpower, and Endurance as you level up. Ignore Willpower if you pick The Atronach as the Birthsign.
- Major Skills – Alteration, Athletics, Block, Blade, Heavy Armor, Restoration, Mysticism.
- Birthsign – Depending on preferences, you get two options here:
- The Lord – Grants you +15 Armor Rating and +15% Magic Resist. If you mostly want to be tanky, this is your choice. Very helpful early in Master Mode.
- The Atronach – Grants you +150 Magicka and 50% Spell Absorption. However, you’ll be unable to regenerate Magicka over time. You’ll need to rely on absorbing spells and using consumables. Better for utility and spellcasting.
In this configuration, you typically follow a conventional Paladin character setup. Some players might opt to choose Speech/Mercantile as their skills and Blunt over Blade for role-playing reasons. However, it’s important to note that these skills may not be as effective when playing on Master difficulty.
Considering what we’ve discussed, you find yourself drawn towards three distinct schools of magic: Transformation, Mysticism, and Renewal, primarily because of their defensive characteristics. Transformation empowers you with Shield charms for reinforcing your defenses. Renewal bestows upon you the abilities to heal, resist harm, and absorb energy. Mysticism equips you with Detect and Reflect spells.
As a gamer, I’d recommend you give Destruction magic a try. It’s not crucial to master it, but if you’re looking for that classic ‘smite’-like power, Destruction’s offensive spells are your best bet.
Beyond that, you possess the conventional melee-fighting abilities including Block, Blade, and Heavy Armor. Additionally, Athletics is beneficial since it enhances your agility. Moreover, having it as a Major Skill means it’s slightly less tedious to upgrade due to its faster progression!
Notes on Equipment
In terms of armor selection, the standard guidelines are applicable. This implies that any Heavy Armor, Shield, and Sword fit this character build. However, it’s crucial to ensure these items have strong Enchantments or seek out Enchanted equipment instead. Here’s a brief rundown of some valuable Enchantments you might encounter:
1. Health Boost: Increases your overall health points.
2. Defense Up: Enhances the defense capabilities of your armor.
3. Attack Speed: Speeds up the rate at which you can attack with your sword.
4. Critical Hit Chance: Improves the likelihood of dealing critical damage with your attacks.
5. Elemental Protection: Shields you from specific elemental attacks, such as fire or ice.
6. Movement Speed: Boosts the speed at which you can move around.
7. Regeneration: Gradually restores your health over time.
- Fortify Skill (pick any of your Major Skills, or Destruction if you choose to use it).
- Fortify Health.
- Fortify Fatigue.
- Fire Damage on Strike (for a flavor of smiting!).
- Resist Normal Weapons.
- Shield.
Besides the gear we just discussed, I’d definitely recommend giving the Crusader’s Relics a spin if you’re playing as a Paladin. These bad boys are packed with enchantments that perfectly align with the build and really bring the power fantasy to life! For those curious about how it looks in action, there’s a snapshot above showcasing the complete set. Enjoy!
To acquire this set, you’ll need to finish the Knight of the Nine questline. The journey begins when you learn about a prophet in Anvil from any Non-Player Character (NPC), and the first step is taking on the “Pilgrimage” quest.
