Marvel’s Sneaky Title Swaps: Is the MCU Hooked on Last-Minute Name Changes?

In 2022, when Thunderbolts was unveiled, there wasn’t much excitement about the film. It seemed like Marvel Studios’ counterpart to The Suicide Squad, assembling a team of baddies to take on a villain far beyond their capabilities. Yet, the asterisk (*) in the title added an element of intrigue to the production, sparking speculation among fans. Some theories suggested that Thunderbolts could be a covert Dark Avengers movie or that the asterisk was connected to Thunderbolt Ross’s role in Captain America: Brave New World. Ultimately, the truth turned out to be more related to the former than the latter. This revelation is significant because it underscores an ongoing trend within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*

After their confrontation with the Void, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine unveils to the media that she has assembled the “New Incarnation of Avengers.” This revelation stuns the team members, but as the title card appears and discloses the new moniker, it seems like the hints were there all along, given that it’s not unprecedented for a Marvel Cinematic Universe project to alter its title.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s New Name Reflected Its Importance

2021 marked the peak of Marvel Studios’ presence on Disney+, with one of their most significant productions being “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” This series brought Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes together to confront a band of super-soldiers. Initially peculiar because Steve Rogers passed his shield to Sam at the end of “Avengers: Endgame,” expecting him to assume the Captain America role. At first, Sam felt unworthy, but he gradually came to understand that Steve had made the right decision as he witnessed the shield misused. In the final episode of “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Sam put on the stars and stripes, saving the day, and the closing credits confirmed this transformation.

In a new twist, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were referred to as Captain America and the Winter Soldier, and despite not receiving extensive marketing like “The New Avengers,” this name aptly represented the story’s power. Surprisingly, when Sam appeared as the Star-Spangled Man in Captain America: Brave New World, it was met with no confusion. This leads one to ponder if Marvel Studios is realizing the advantage of misdirection and considering employing it again in future productions.

Will the MCU Look to Change More Titles in the Future?

It’s clear that the change in title for the movie “Thunderbolts” is going well so far. Some might think it’s too early to tell after just one weekend, but Marvel is hoping that the new title “New Avengers” will attract more audiences. If this strategy works, it could create a significant impact, boosting excitement for the upcoming MCU films, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” and “Avengers: Doomsday.” A successful move like this would only strengthen Marvel Studios’ collection of tools, and given the rich history of Marvel Comics, the potential outcomes are limitless.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been pondering how Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) could introduce another title change, and here’s an idea that resonates with me. Post the upcoming Avengers films, perhaps Yelena Belova will grace our screens in her own movie or series, where she embraces the “Black Widow” mantle by its end. However, if Marvel aims for something even more spectacular, they could greenlight a sequel to “The Marvels,” rebranding it as “A-Force.” This new title would bring together Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Valkyrie once more, fostering the emergence of an all-female Avengers team in live-action. The MCU has already confirmed the existence of two active Avenger teams with Thunderbolts, so establishing a third wouldn’t be out of the question. This approach seems like a win-win situation, as it not only revitalizes projects with less buzz but also offers Marvel Studios an innovative platform to shape the future.

Thunderbolts* is in theaters now.
