The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is divided into distinct periods, or Phases. For example, Phase One started with the movie ‘Iron Man’ and ended with ‘The Avengers’. Similarly, Phase Three ranged from ‘Captain America: Civil War’ to ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’. The upcoming MCU film, ‘Thunderbolts‘, marks the end of Phase Five, which began with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. This phase has been considered particularly challenging in terms of movie quality compared to previous phases.
Phase Five had its fair share of subpar films compared to Phase Four, but the creative dips were significantly more pronounced. Relying heavily on sequels and spin-offs, Phase Five was lacking in bold, controversial productions like “Eternals”. Arranging the six movies from least favorite to favorite highlights the creative challenges the franchise has faced over the past two years. Fortunately, some of the better films from this phase still managed to capture the charm that used to be synonymous with the Marvel Studios logo on the big screen.
6) Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
If the earlier Ant-Man films were characterized by lighter, humorous content, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania seemed to overdo it with larger-than-life spectacle more akin to the Avengers. This shift, asking a writer without prior screenplay credits and a director known for comedies to create something as expansive as Star Wars, led to issues. The film suffered from blurry visuals and questionable portrayals of Marvel Comics characters like MODOK, which only added to its problems. However, it’s worth noting that Michelle Pfieffer had more screen time in a movie that largely embodies the flaws prevalent in contemporary superhero films.
5) Captain America: Brave New World
In an unexpected turn, the fourth film featuring Captain America, titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” seemed to serve more as a continuation of 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk.” The character of Sam Wilson/Captain America appeared lost in a storyline where the emotional core revolved around convincing viewers that a President who commits war crimes is fundamentally good. The most enjoyable aspect of “Brave New World” was observing the humorous, yet obviously re-shot scenes. For instance, a crucial third-act scene between Wilson and the villainous Leader, happening right outside a hospital, was so clearly filmed without both actors being present at the same time that it was almost comical. Apart from these unintentional chuckles, “Brave New World” was rather dull.
4) The Marvels
If only “The Marvels” had opted for a more intimate storyline, focusing on the amusing everyday struggles of Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan as she navigates high school with the help of Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau, it could have been truly captivating. The comedic scenes imagining Danvers and Rambeau disrupting Khan’s relatable home life would have showcased the unique appeal of this dynamic trio. Unfortunately, “The Marvels” chose to delve into a less engaging cosmic drama revolving around the vengeful Kree soldier Dar-Benn and Captain Marvel saving a solar system’s sun. By the time the climax unfolded with a tear in the fabric of reality, it was hard to find interest as “The Marvels” had grown too grandiose for me to connect with. The humorous aspects of this Nia DaCosta-directed film only underscored how disappointingly forgettable its larger elements became.
3) Deadpool & Wolverine
The endless jokes about the MCU hitting a rough patch and the repetitive use of multiverse themes can’t hide the flaws in Deadpool & Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds’ humor quickly becomes tiresome, and the worn-out edgy jokes have been executed better elsewhere. The confusing multiverse plot and Shawn Levy’s lackluster direction don’t make things easier. However, the dedicated performances of Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, and Channing Tatum keep this comedy afloat. A thrilling finale accompanied by a choir performing “Like a Prayer” is quite moving. Regardless, for a film as sarcastic as Deadpool & Wolverine, it could have benefited from more unique humor.
2) Thunderbolts*
Despite some persistent issues with choppy scenes and tight framing found in many Marvel Cinematic Universe films, including Phase Five, the finale film Thunderbolts stands out as entertaining due to a more personal focus that allows strong performances to shine. The script also delivers a unique and emotionally engaging third act, moving beyond the typical live-action superheroes fighting hordes of CGI villains. And let’s not forget the captivating dynamic between David Harbour and Florence Pugh!
1) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Instead of focusing on reminding audiences about the past or setting up future Disney+ shows, many Phase Five MCU films were preoccupied with such tasks. However, James Gunn’s exceptional perspective for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, in contrast, was entirely centered around the present moment. This focus resulted in the creation of an exceptionally successful and memorable gem within this era of the MCU. The movie excelled in both its poignant portrayals of traumatic childhoods and cosmic humor, with these seemingly contradictory themes harmoniously complementing each other. Moreover, the cast members, particularly Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff, have become so at ease with their characters that simply watching them interact is a delight. The conclusive ending (accompanied by a fitting Florence + The Machine track) further enriched the emotional depth of the film, solidifying its unique place among Phase Five features.
1. You can now stream Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on Disney+.
2. Thunderbolts is currently showing in cinemas.
*Note: Thunderbolts refers to an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, not directly related to the comic book team with the same name.
