The Last of Us 2: Shocking Ending Explained

If you’re currently enjoying the television show “The Last of Us” but can’t bear the suspense of waiting for its conclusion, here’s some good news: much of the plot has already been revealed since the series is based on a well-known video game franchise by Naughty Dog. Since these games have been around for quite a while, gamers have had ample time to understand their intricacies. Although the television adaptation has made certain changes, it has largely stuck to the main narrative, providing non-gamers with an engaging adaptation of the story.

It appears that the unfavorable aspect is that the narrative of The Last of Us show might extend over a considerable period due to the extended length and complexity of the second game. While the first season covered the entirety of the first game, the second game is significantly longer and intricate, necessitating additional time for adaptation. Even the latest episode hints at preserving the game’s debatable structure. Therefore, it seems that The Last of Us Season 2 may not wrap up the story right away. However, take heart because The Last of Us Season 3 has been confirmed! If you can’t wait that long, we can provide a broad overview of where the story is likely to head next.

What Happens in The Last of Us Part 2?

In approximately 25 hours, The Last of Us Part 2 unfolds a comprehensive storyline without delving into every minute detail. Here’s an overview of the key points: After spending three days in Seattle, Ellie fails to locate and eliminate Abby. Though Ellie manages to kill most of Abby’s crew, Abby remains elusive… that is, until she locates Ellie at the theater. In a dramatic turn of events, Abby fatally shoots Jesse and wounds Tommy by shooting him in the back of the head.

In the theater’s backstage area, Ellie and Abby engage in a fierce altercation that nearly claims both Ellie’s and Dina’s lives. However, Abby’s actions are halted by Lev, a former child of Seraphites condemned to death for being transgender, who now stands by Abby as her companion. Recognizing that this destructive cycle of violence is unproductive, Abby decides to let Ellie and Dina escape once more.

In the tranquil setting of a farm, Ellie and Dina reside with their child, J.J., several months on. While the serene atmosphere suggests contentment, Ellie is deeply troubled by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), struggling to come to terms with Joel’s demise. Later, Tommy makes an appearance, informing them that Maria has departed due to his fixation on vengeance. He discloses Abby’s whereabouts in California and encourages Ellie to pursue her, mentioning his incapacity to do so because of the severe injuries he sustained in Seattle. Dina reprimands him, but this revelation leaves Ellie noticeably distressed.

When Ellie couldn’t sleep, she decided to journey alone to California against Dina’s wishes. Meanwhile, Abby and Lev were looking into a whisper that the Fireflies had resurfaced in Santa Barbara, California. After some time, they discovered a radio which hinted that the Fireflies were reorganizing on Catalina Island. However, they didn’t take long to be apprehended by an armed group called the Rattlers, who held both humans and infected captive. As the months went by, Ellie eventually reached Santa Barbara and stumbled upon the Rattler camp.

Abby liberates several inmates and discovers Abby is on the beach, hanging from a cross. Abby appears dramatically thin and much of her hair has been shorn, making her nearly unidentifiable. After securing Lev, Abby guides Ellie towards a boat by the shore, thinking she had no intention of causing harm. Ellie proposes a fight, but Abby declines. Fearing for Lev’s life, Abby is compelled to act, leading to a confrontation.

In this scenario, Abby and another character engage in a fierce struggle in the water. Abby manages to bite off two of her opponent’s fingers. However, the other character gains the advantage and starts drowning her adversary. But then, an image of Joel sitting on his porch suddenly appears in her mind, causing Abby to release her foe and tell her to leave and “take him”. This seems to be a reference to Lev, but also may symbolize her recollection of Joel as well. In the end, Abby and Lev escape into the ocean and eventually reach Catalina Island, as their boat is shown wrecked near one of the island’s landmarks after the credits roll.

Upon reaching her farmhouse, Ellie finds Dina, J.J., and most of their possessions missing, leaving behind a chilling echo of her past happiness. It’s clear now that the path she chose for revenge lacked its intended reward. Yet, there, by a window, remains the guitar Joel had given her as a token of their bond. Unable to play it due to her lost fingers, she is reminded of her last heart-wrenching conversation with Joel from the hospital in Salt Lake City during the first game. Although the memory still pains her, she acknowledges that Joel’s actions were driven by love, and even though full forgiveness may elude her, she vows to strive for it.

Ellie sets her guitar by the window and subsequently departs from the house, but it’s uncertain where she might be headed next. It’s possible she’s returning to Jackson, or perhaps seeking out Dina, or maybe venturing someplace new altogether. In any event, what Ellie has inadvertently triggered is her deepest fear: solitude.

Currently, predictions suggest that “The Last of Us” TV series will span approximately four seasons in total. That means it could be some time before we reach that point. Luckily, if you’re eager to experience the story right away, you can play the game on PS4, PS5, or PC.
