Fans of horror films have been enjoying a veritable feast recently, thanks to the outstanding new horror movies that have been released in 2025’s movie schedule. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is one of the main reasons for this delight, as it has rapidly become one of the best horror films in recent years, earning critical acclaim and continuing to be a massive box office success. Given its impressive track record, discussions about a sequel were bound to arise. In fact, one member of the Sinners cast has expressed their enthusiasm for reprising their role as “absolutely fantastic,” and I must admit, I wholeheartedly agree.
Jack O’Connell, who brought the chilling and centuries-old vampire character Remmick to life in the popular period horror film, has expressed his enthusiasm for revisiting the role in future projects. Frankly, I share this excitement. Although the series finale of “Sinners” seemed to conclusively resolve its main characters’ arcs, the allure of exploring Remmick’s past through a prequel is undeniable. As Jack himself stated:
That’s a f—ing fantastic character to step into. So if Coogler’s up for it, I am.
Indeed, isn’t it understandable why one might find themselves intrigued by O’Connell’s character, Remmick? His aura exudes an unsettling combination of threat and enigma, the sort of presence that leaves you pondering about the turmoil he may have instigated throughout history.
According to an article in GQ, it’s apparent that both O’Connell and Michael B. Jordan are open to delving further into the world of the Sinners. Jordan himself has expressed his readiness, whether it involves a prequel, sequel, or spin-off. However, the uncertainty lies with director Ryan Coogler, who appears to be more cautious about the prospect.
In a previous conversation with Ebony magazine, Coogler explained that the movie Sinners was intended to stand alone, likening it to a complete meal without any leftovers. After spending many years in the world of franchise films, it seems he yearned for a fresh start and an original piece not planned as a series. However, the film’s massive box office earnings could make turning down future projects more challenging.
The film titled “Sinners” has surpassed predictions and is heading towards the milestone of being the first original live-action movie to gross over $200 million domestically since “Gravity” in 2013. Given such impressive figures, studios rarely let opportunities like this slip by without considering creating a spin-off or sequel.
Let’s discuss what a potential continuation or even prequel might entail. To be honest, I have some reservations about this idea, but if Ryan Coogler is on board too, then I can understand why Martin O’Connell feels excited about the prospect. I believe there are creative avenues to explore in which the filmmaker could deliver a fresh and appealing sequel that respects the original while also presenting a self-contained narrative and introducing new, captivating stories.
Instead of simply being a typical villain, Remmick appears to be an ancient figure with a long history. A prequel focusing on his origins, potentially set in medieval Ireland, could offer an intriguing exploration of the “Sinners” universe without compromising the well-developed characters like Stack, Smoke, and their comrades. This approach would ensure that the original’s potency isn’t diminished, while allowing actor O’Connell to fully embrace the ominous vampire character, benefiting all involved.
Indeed, it’s all contingent upon Coogler’s decisions. At present, the director of Black Panther is aiming for a fresh take on The X-Files’ comeback, which could be both daring and perhaps scary. However, as we’ve seen in the past, Hollywood often subtly persuades even the most resistant artists to revisit franchise opportunities, especially when the audience (and the actors) are eager for it.
Should Jack O’Connell express interest in exploring more about Remmick and the studio perceives potential earnings from a prequel, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to speculate about the prospect of a Remmick spin-off prequel or perhaps even a sequel to Sinners.
Sinners is now playing in theaters everywhere. Be sure to check your local listings for showtimes.
