As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but express my admiration for the phenomenal TV show, “Yellowstone.” Since its explosive premiere on June 20, 2018, this neo-Western drama has undeniably become one of the most captivating series of the moment. The incredible cast, headed by Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Luke Grimes, and Cole Hauser, has kept audiences enthralled for five action-packed seasons. The show’s success has given birth to numerous spin-offs such as “1883” and “1923,” with the highly anticipated Michelle Pfeiffer series, “The Madison,” set to debut soon.
In March 2025, it was announced that a spin-off series focusing on Grimes’ character Kayce Dutton, titled “Y: Marshals,” is in development and has been greenlit for production. Expected to air as part of CBS’ midseason schedule in 2026, this anticipated sequel aims to expand the world of “Yellowstone.” Here are some details we have gathered about the upcoming series, “Y: Marshals.
Who Is Starring in ‘Y: Marshals’?
Following five exhilarating seasons portraying the youngest Dutton sibling on Yellowstone, Luke Grimes is set to ride off into a fresh journey as Kayce Dutton in the upcoming spin-off titled Y: Marshals. This new series marks the latest addition to the ever-growing universe of Yellowstone, which has been thriving under the creative direction of TV titan Taylor Sheridan, who is also behind the prequel shows 1883 and 1923.
In the upcoming seasons, Marshals will collaborate with other Sheridan projects such as The Madison and the yet-unnamed Beth Dutton & Rip Wheeler spin-off. So far, only Grimes has been confirmed to reprise his role from the original series. Fans may also anticipate seeing Monica (Kelsey Asbille), Kayce’s wife, and their son Tate (Brecken Merrill) in some form. Before Yellowstone’s series finale in December 2024, Grimes had hinted at a potential Kayce spin-off, telling People that it depends entirely on Sheridan’s vision, emphasizing that everything hinges on their creative decisions.
In simpler terms, “When something is very successful, there’s a sense of obligation to maintain that success because they understand they have an audience who expects more. However, the ultimate decision lies with Taylor [Sheridan]. He needs to visualize it in order to write it, and I don’t believe he’ll write something that he’s not passionate about.
What Is the Premise of the Newly Announced Spin-off?
The show, tentatively named Y: Marshals, continues from where its previous series ended, with Kayce Dutton selling a significant part of the Yellowstone Ranch to Rainwater and his tribe and seemingly transitioning away from ranching. In this new phase, we’ll see Kayce exploring a different profession as he trades in his cowboy boots for a law enforcement career, becoming a member of an elite U.S. Marshals unit.
In the upcoming spin-off series, character Kayce uses his expertise as both a cowboy and Navy SEAL to uphold justice on the ranchlands of Montana. Alongside his teammates, he navigates the complexities of family life, loyalty, and the emotional toll that comes with being the primary defense against crime in this region. If the success of Yellowstone and its offshoots is any guide, Kayce’s journey will be filled with thrilling escapades, formidable enemies, and both trusted allies and unexpected adversaries as he takes on the role of a Marshal.
Who Is the Creative Team Behind the Series?
It comes as no surprise that Sheridan has been appointed as an executive producer for Y: Marshals, joining lead actor Grimes and veteran producers David C. Glasser, John Linson, Art Linson, and John Lanson. Spencer Hudnut (known for SEAL Team and The Blacklist: Redemption) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. CBS President Amy Reisenbach has hinted at Sheridan’s possible involvement in the project, stating “we’re still in the early stages. He’s a very busy individual, so we’ll take whatever time he can spare.
Unlike Yellowstone and its prequels which stream exclusively on Paramount+, Y: Marshals will air new episodes on CBS as well. Reisenbach emphasized to excited fans that the spin-off will maintain the same level of quality and grandeur as the other companion shows and the Western series on Paramount Network, stating confidently, “we don’t do cheap.” Reisenbach also mentioned about showrunner Hudnut, “Spencer Hudnut has experience running a broadcast show. We have a budget for that show that is comparable to other network television series.
When Will ‘Y: Marshals’ Premiere?
In a departure from other shows within the Yellowstone universe, Grimes is set to transport his cherished Dutton character to network television. The spin-off series, Y: Marshals, is slated for release midway through the 2025-26 season on CBS’s Sunday schedule, with new episodes airing at 9 p.m. EST. Fans of Sheridan can look forward to a double bill of creative content, as his unscripted music competition show, The Road, featuring country stars Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, and Gretchen Wilson, will be broadcast every Sunday evening during the fall.
