Andor Drops HUGE Secret About Mon Mothma’s Past

Somehow, managed to stick to canon while blazing its own trail.

As a devoted cinematic enthusiast, I recently had an engaging chat with Tony Gilroy about the challenge of reinterpreting Mon Mothma’s speech condemning the Ghorman Massacre in a manner that aligns seamlessly with both Andor and Star Wars Rebels. Unlike many scenes from season 2, this anti-Imperial address is firmly rooted in established canon. Gilroy pondered, “How do we navigate the fact that in this narrative, she’s saved by Gold Squadron? I’d rather not introduce a multitude of new characters or opt for those particular ones.

Gold Squadron introduces a hidden chapter in Cassian Andor’s story to the Ghost crew, as “Welcome to the Rebellion” uncovers that he assisted Mon Mothma in escaping the Imperial Senate, though his role in the rescue remained unacknowledged. This revelation, according to director Tony Gilroy, allows the Rebel Alliance to celebrate Andor’s heroic deeds without focusing on the details of their relationship. He likens this approach to a construction project, explaining that he intentionally designed the show so that they don’t get together until later episodes, such as episode 10 at Yavin, to avoid disappointment.

Apart from explaining this action, he mentioned that it stemmed from the Rebellion managing its public perception and secret activities. This gradual development contributes to the formation of the huge yet disorganized alliance portrayed in the series, and indeed, as the story unfolds throughout season 2, we see hints of this concept being gradually expanded upon, as Gilroy stated in his interview.

2017’s “Rebels” episode titled “Secret Cargo” marked Genevieve O’Reilly’s comeback as Mothma, who had previously portrayed the Senator in another project. This was after her brief appearance in “Rogue One” a few months before. Much like Mothma’s speech, “Andor” season 2 re-enacted the Ghorman Massacre incident, setting the stage for the portrayal of this Legends-era tragedy – where Grand Moff Tarkin ruthlessly destroyed a starcruiser on protesters. Other events were given new interpretations in the series, with the last scene showcasing K-2SO’s introduction differently than his first encounter with Cassian Andor in a standalone comic tale.

Mon Mothma Cameoed

In addition to appearing in the show “Andor,” Mon Mothma made an appearance in “Ahsoka” as the Chancellor of the New Republic, following the complete fall and breakdown of the Galactic Empire. Although the series has started airing, a specific release date is yet to be announced.

The final Andor episodes air Tuesday, May 13 on Disney+.
