The Rings of Power Season 2 revealed that Gandalf is currently in Middle-earth. However, this version of Gandalf isn’t the same wise wizard we’re familiar with from the original series. Instead, he’s new to Middle-earth and has yet to discover his true identity or origins. As the story unfolds, he learns to use his magic for good, particularly under the guidance of the Harfoots. Yet, actor Daniel Weyman hinted that Gandalf will make some significant errors in Season 3, which could shape his transformation into Gandalf the Grey. When asked by Deadline about what fans can anticipate from Gandalf in Season 3, Weyman playfully teased: “Expect tears.
The actor expressed enthusiasm about the numerous potential stumbles, blunders, and mistakes young Gandalf will encounter, which they believe are essential for his growth. Essentially, anything could happen since the only way we’ll witness the emergence of a wise being is if he makes some serious mistakes and finds himself in tricky situations, needing to learn from them. So, they’re hoping for plenty of such events to watch Gandalf grow and understand how he becomes the beloved wizard we know.
The television series titled ‘The Rings of Power’ unfolds a tale that transpired thousands of years prior to the events depicted in ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’. While it may be challenging to pinpoint its exact position on the timeline due to some creative liberties with chronology, it is important to note that Gandalf, as we know him from these stories, did not appear on Middle-earth until the Third Age. Conversely, ‘The Rings of Power’ is set during the Second Age. Most information about Gandalf’s activities during this era comes from J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, ‘The Silmarillion’. It’s worth mentioning that ‘The Rings of Power’ draws its source material solely from ‘The Lord of the Rings’, and not from ‘The Hobbit’ or any other works by Tolkien.
For Weyman, distancing himself from the original source material provides a sense of freedom. In the same interview, he admitted that he feels minimal pressure to emulate Sir Ian McKellen’s legendary portrayal of Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s trilogies. He elaborated, “I find delight in the fact that I was given a character who was ignorant at the start when he arrived in Middle-earth. All I had to do was play each scene as it unfolded. I didn’t have to concern myself with what was to come later because my character is not the same, and it takes place thousands of years before his time, so I’m not playing that role.
Filming for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 3 commenced at the end of April, but a release date has yet to be announced. You can currently stream seasons one and two on Amazon Prime Video, and Tolkien’s books are accessible in print, digital, and audio formats.
