Uncharted Territory

Previously, Chris Clenshaw, former EastEnders executive producer, experienced an incredibly prosperous tenure at the soap’s helm before departing post the 40th anniversary festivities in February. Consequently, Ben Wadey, his successor, now faces a daunting task as he takes over, given the impressive legacy left behind by Chris Clenshaw.

However, as per the statements made by Kate Oates, the Head of Continuing Drama at BBC, it appears that Wadey is eager to tackle the upcoming challenges and moreover, is poised to lead the soap opera into uncharted waters during the following months.

At the 2025 BAFTA TV Awards, where the soap took home awards for Best Soap and Continuing Drama, Oates shared a glimpse of what viewers might anticipate in the coming days.

She clarified, “There are quite a few significant events heading their way, if I may hint at it, for the folks from the heartland.

In light of the path blazed by Mr. Clenshaw, it’s quite an honor for us to venture into unexplored realms, as our new executive, Ben [Wadey], steps up to continue the impressive work started by Chris. We’re confident and eager as a team, knowing that Ben is well-prepared to build upon this achievement.

She added: “We’re going to miss Chris terribly, but we’re also really excited for what’s to come.”

In 2019, EastEnders claimed victory in the Best Soap and Continuing Drama category for the first time. This triumph was achieved over strong competition, with Coronation Street and last year’s winner, Casualty, being contenders but ultimately losing out to EastEnders, thus earning the prestigious award.

At the event, where artists like Jessie J and Tom Grennan performed, the programs with the highest number of nominations were Baby Reindeer, Mr. Bates vs The Post Office, Rivals, and Slow Horses, each aiming for a significant victory that evening.

ultimately, “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” took home the prize for Outstanding Limited Drama Series, and “Baby Reindeer” gained recognition as well, with Jessica Gunning earning the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role.

In addition to the main contenders, Mr. Loverman garnered recognition in two categories: Leading Actor (won by Lennie James) and Supporting Actor (Ariyon Bakare). Furthermore, Alma’s Not Normal was declared the Best Scripted Comedy.
