Upon the arrival of Nintendo Switch 2 next month, a variety of fresh peripherals will be available alongside it. Alongside the newly introduced camera, a revised Pro Controller will also be up for sale. At first sight, the new Pro Controller appears quite similar to its counterpart for the existing Switch, but there are some significant enhancements. Although Nintendo has detailed numerous changes, one enthusiast found an unexpected upgrade during a hands-on event in Amsterdam. According to Reddit user Malaxyz, Nintendo has upgraded the D-pad on the controller, making it more precise than its current version.
According to multiple Reddit users, there’s a problem with accidental inputs on the D-pad of the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It seems Nintendo might have addressed this issue in the design for the Switch 2 controller. However, we won’t truly know how much it’s been improved until the new controller goes on sale. Regardless, this potential fix could make the controller a worthwhile purchase for those still undecided. If the improvement on the D-pad is indeed real, it might indicate other internal improvements as well, such as solving the drift problems that have been common with the Switch.
Although Nintendo hasn’t confirmed changes to the D-pad yet, they’ve been transparent about several other modifications coming in the new Pro Controller for the Switch 2. One significant update is the inclusion of a built-in audio jack, which was previously only available on the handheld system but not on the Pro Controller. While officially licensed wired controllers provided this feature as an option, wireless users with wired headphones were left without a solution. The new Pro Controller will also include some fresh buttons – GL and GR can be assigned functions and are located at the rear of the controller, while the C button upfront is compatible with GameChat for voice communication.
It’s understandable that Nintendo might focus more on advertising external changes rather than internal improvements for their upcoming system. Since they’re easier to promote, they may not have discussed them extensively with the public yet. However, as the launch date of Nintendo Switch 2 (June 5th) approaches, we might hear more details. Nintendo has been using their new Nintendo Today app to provide insights into some smaller changes, so fans could potentially find out more there.
Although the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has its share of imperfections, it’s widely admired by users. The rumored enhancements in the Switch 2 Pro Controller indicate potential significant upgrades, addressing many of the expectations built during the Switch generation. However, one area where it falls short is the lack of game-themed variants revealed so far. Given the abundance of such designs during the Switch era, it’s likely that we’ll see new ones in the near future, possibly inspired by games like “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” and “Pokemon Legends: Z-A”. Fingers crossed!
