The show, sharing its title with the 1975 novel penned by James Clavell and preceded by a 1980 television adaptation, garnered immense popularity upon its premiere in the previous year and secured a swift renewal for another season shortly after.
As a movie critic, I am thrilled to share that the sequel is shaping up quite well, set to premiere on Disney Plus in the UK. At the 2025 BAFTA Television Awards red carpet with P&O Cruises, Mark shared an exciting update: “We resume our story in Vancouver, and we’ll be preparing in just a couple of months – I’m personally heading there in two weeks to scout out our initial filming locations.
He mentioned: “Filming commences in January – however, this timeline is insufficient for us to gather everything necessary. As a result, we are expediting production to ensure its release…
“It’s a lot less time to make the show this time around than we had in the first season.”
Initially, it took us about nine months from start to finish to film the initial episodes, with the actual shooting taking place from September 2021 to June 2022.
Currently, actor Hiroyuki Sanada, portraying Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the show, shared that the team behind the scenes, specifically the writers, are putting in a great effort for the upcoming season.
He mentioned that while they aim to preserve the authentic flavor from Season 1 for Season 2, they also strive to surprise even those well-versed in the actual history and events.

Reflecting on the achievement of season one, he expressed surprise by saying, “I could hardly have foreseen” the great reception the series would receive.
He stated: “‘This was 70% in Japanese, with subtitles,’ I pondered, ‘Will it be well-liked?’ Yet, once we unveiled it, the response from both viewers and critics exceeded our expectations tremendously… wow, far beyond what we had anticipated.
The show was honored with the Best International Programme Award at the BAFTAs, further extending its impressive collection of recognitions.
At the press conference following the announcement of the winner, Mark shared a few intriguing hints about what viewers can anticipate in the upcoming second season.
In the sequel, there’s a leap of ten years ahead, and considering the history we’ve established so far, I firmly believe this offers us ample room to develop the series in numerous thrilling, innovative ways. (First person: “I see a great opportunity for us to expand and evolve the show in many fascinating directions with this 10-year time jump we have in part two.”)
In the upcoming season, we aim to preserve the essence of James Clavell’s book by maintaining its captivating characterizations, intricate plotting, and immersive world-building. Additionally, the heartfelt romantic stories are definitely something you can anticipate.
The historical series “Shōgun” chronicles the story of the English sailor John Blackthorne (portrayed by Cosmo Jarvis), who gets stranded in Japan during the 17th century and finds himself caught up in the country’s power struggles and internal politics.
Previously, the series broke a record by being the most honored television season ever at the Emmys, taking home a total of 18 awards, among them the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series accolade that was bestowed upon it during the US award ceremony held in September 2024.
In case you missed it, the first season of “Shogun” is now streaming on Disney+! If you’re not already a subscriber, you can join Disney+ by paying just £4.99 per month or £79.90 for an annual subscription. Enjoy the action right away!
