During a recent financial conference call, David Zaslav, CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery, offered an official update about James Gunn’s upcoming reboot of Wonder Woman within the context of DC Studios. The Amazonian heroine has been somewhat absent from the limelight since Gunn and Peter Safran took charge, with most recent news pertaining to this section of the DC universe being quite dated at this point as Gal Gadot has moved on from the role and a new television series centered around Wonder Woman, named Paradise Lost, was commissioned.
During Warner Bros.’ Q1 2025 earnings conference, David Zaslav (CEO and president of Warner Bros. Discovery) shared updates with fans about some of the studio’s most popular franchises, including James Gunn’s reboot of Wonder Woman. The legendary Amazonian warrior, Diana of Themyscira, was mentioned among other key DC characters as one that Warner Bros. intends to further develop in order to maximize their internal intellectual property assets.
Zaslav pointed out the significant characters that James Gunn and Peter Safran are focusing on, with a special mention of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl. He referred to these as the primary building blocks for their major assets.
In their ten-year strategy for DC characters, James Gunn and Peter Safran aim to create and refine key characters such as Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, and Supergirl. This strategic development is designed to increase our company’s value globally, in every corner of the world. These characters are seen as significant assets that will set us apart from others.
This point stands out because there hasn’t been much news about the future of Wonder Woman in the DC Universe, unlike the other points mentioned by Zaslav.
The television series titled “Wonder Woman: Paradise Lost” is still being worked on by DC Studios, but it’s said that this project will serve as a prequel to the character and may not feature Wonder Woman herself. Unlike some of the other projects linked to Zaslav’s other DC Universe cornerstones, the progress on this show has been reportedly slower.
In January 2023, it was revealed that “Paradise Lost” was part of James Gunn’s initial DCU plan. This story has been likened to a tale similar to “Game of Thrones,” as it narrates the beginnings of the enigmatic land where Wonder Woman ultimately originates, as depicted in the Gal Gadot-led “Wonder Woman” films.
It’s uncertain if the story of the Max series involves Wonder Woman personally, since no actor has been chosen for the DCU version of the hero at this point. Apart from Peter Safran and James Gunn, who are set to serve as executive producers, there are currently no significant creatives associated with the project.
What Do David Zaslav’s Comments Mean For Wonder Woman?
Some might find it surprising that David Zaslav casually listed Wonder Woman among his heroes during this earnings discussion.
The character plays an essential role in the foundation of the DC Comics universe (as part of the DC Trinity), yet it appears that she hasn’t received as much attention from the DC Universe, especially initially, compared to certain other well-known figures.
Almost every character that Zaslav introduced has a current production in progress. Although Paradise Lost is still listed on the DC Studios schedule, it hasn’t shown significant progress since its announcement over two years back.
If Zaslov considers Wonder Woman as crucial for the brand as he claims, it seems logical that they would prioritize having her appear on either the big or small screen at the earliest opportunity, given the popularity of the superhero franchise.
It’s possible that updates regarding “Paradise Lost” or another potential Wonder Woman project might be forthcoming, but it seems that James Gunn and his team aren’t quite prepared to share this news with us just yet.
It seems that the character, who has made a cameo in the DC Universe through an episode of “Creature Commandos”, is poised for a more prominent role. All that remains is for DC Studios to accelerate their plans and launch the character’s standalone movie or series.
