On Sunday, AMC Networks paid tribute to a member of The Walking Dead family, Frank Hildebrand. For eight seasons from 2016 to 2023, Hildebrand served as unit production manager and producer on Fear the Walking Dead. Tragically, Hildebrand passed away on November 21, 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 73. In his final season, he made a small screen appearance as a stranded German tourist named Hildy in the eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead.
Paying tribute and expressing affection to Frank Hildebrand (1950-2024). This heartfelt message was displayed before the credits of the May 11 episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2, marking the first Walking Dead series to air on the network following Hildebrand’s passing in November.
As a movie enthusiast who’s recently had the pleasure of delving into the thrilling world of “Fear the Walking Dead”, I can’t help but share my admiration for one of its dedicated behind-the-scenes figures – the line producer we fondly know as Hildebrand. Recently, Scott M. Gimple, an executive producer and overseer of AMC’s The Walking Dead Universe, took to social media to honor this unsung hero with a heartwarming tribute. In his post, he shared a captivating image of Hildebrand standing proudly next to the iconic SWAT van that once belonged to Althea on the set of “Fear”. It’s moments like these that remind us all of the countless individuals who work tirelessly to bring our favorite stories to life.
Gimple tweeted in November that we’ve lost a remarkable person, FTWD’s Frank Hildebrand. He was a master at managing chaos and creating tranquility amidst the turmoil of producing sixteen episodes per year. He knew how to balance work and play, always with grace. One of those exceptional individuals who stays by your side, he was a distinctive character in his own right. We were fortunate to have known and worked with him.
Sadly, we bid farewell to Frank Hildebrand from Fear the Walking Dead, a masterful craftsman who skillfully balanced chaos and tranquility in the turbulent production of sixteen episodes each year. He was not only proficient at his work but also knew how to relax with grace. One of those exceptional individuals who leaves an indelible mark, he was more than just a colleague – a truly remarkable character of integrity. It was a privilege to know and collaborate with him.

Previously, Frank Hildebrand had a brief appearance in the role of Hildy during the second half of season 8 on Fear the Walking Dead, following his cameo as a Lawton Ranger in season 6’s “Welcome to the Club” episode. In an interview with AMC.com in 2023, showrunners Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg mentioned that the character of Hildy was written with Frank specifically in mind because of his Swiss German background. They praised him as a versatile actor and line producer for the series.
Hildebrand is known for working on close to 100 episodes of the television series, ‘Fear the Walking Dead’. Filming took place in various locations such as Mexico, Austin, Texas, and Savannah, Georgia. As per his resume, this experienced producer was proficient in English, German, French, and Italian. Being a part of both the DGA (Directors Guild of America) and the PGA (Producers Guild of America), Hildebrand’s initial credit was that of an assistant line producer on the 1981 horror thriller, ‘Savage Harvest’, which was filmed in Mexico and Kenya. This movie revolved around man-eating lions.
Throughout his four-decade-long profession, Hildebrand held various key roles such as co-producer for “Vice Squad” (1982), producer/line producer for Jim Carrey’s vampire comedy “Once Bitten” (1985), line producer for Oliver Stone-executive produced films like “Freeway” (1996) and Miramax’s live-action “Beowulf” (1999). Additionally, he served as executive producer on the 2006 remake of “The Hills Have Eyes,” produced by Wes Craven, and the 2007 road trip drama “Into the Wild,” directed by Sean Penn, which was twice nominated for Academy Awards.
As the production head at River Road Entertainment, Hildebrand managed the movies “Fair Game” (2010) starring Penn and Naomi Watts, the coming-of-age biopic “The Runaways” (2010), and the Best Picture-nominated film “The Tree of Life” (2011), which featured Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Penn.
According to his IMDb profile, Hildebrand is set to feature in “Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland: The Empire Pictures Saga”, a crowdfunded documentary detailing the story of Empire Pictures, an influential B-movie studio during the 1980s. For Empire Studios, Hildebrand worked as a line producer on the 1987 film “Prison” and the 1989 film “Robot Jox”.
