In another chapter unfolds, another challenging lesson awaits in “The Walking Dead: Dead City.” As Season 2, Episode 2 commences, we find ourselves in a classroom-like setting. The students, or rather characters, are about to learn a hard-earned lesson: Be cautious when venturing into potentially dangerous territories, relying on overconfidence alone as your protection.
Maggie and Ginny make their way to New York, with New Babylon serving as their destination. Meanwhile, Negan grapples with his newfound power, pondering its implications. To lighten the mood, Victor, a violinist, offers him samples of classic compositions: Vivaldi, Mozart, Brahms, and Bach.
Similar to how Victor found comfort in Bach’s music as a child, Negan might endure another tough session with the Croat if he concentrates on his passion. Despite the advice from his parents and music teacher favoring loud and aggressive artists, he discovered solace in Bach’s “rich, multi-layered, and exhilarating” tunes.
New Babylon Underestimates the Croat
Maggie Fails to Persuade Governor Byrd to Turn Back
With pride and arrogance swelling, they embark on their investigative journey. Governor Charlie Byrd and Marshall Lucia Narvaez are readying for a potential conflict, though they may be taking the offensive more than defending. Perlie Armstrong is resistant to the notion of battle, holding onto the belief that this is merely an expedition. Maggie attempts to alert them about the dangers of using a ferry, but Narvaez responds sharply before she can finish. Only Perlie listens to Maggie’s concerns, as she mentions that the Croat will spot them from miles away on the ferry. Maggie is shrewd; she doesn’t underestimate their adversaries. Perlie shares her caution, but ultimately has little control over the situation.
It appears that Maggie has valid concerns, as it seems an unknown individual has communicated to the Croat and the Dama about the impending attack on New Babylon. This raises questions about loyalty within New Babylon, as there might be a traitor among them. The Dama is troubled because she hasn’t managed to unite all of New York’s gangs under her leadership yet. Christos and Bruegel are still undecided, but it seems they don’t need them for the defense plan that Negan and the Croat have devised, which resembles a Fourth of July-style strategy aimed at disabling New Babylon’s ferry as well as sending a strong message to discourage anyone from setting foot on the island.
New Babylon Faces an Attack on the Water
Negan and the Croat Light Up the Ferry in a Fatal Strike on New Babylon
In a different phrasing,
Narvaez warns Maggie and Hershel that they will be executed if they try to leave, after Maggie threatens to do so. This happens when they are seized by soldiers following their discovery of the same signal that was received by both Dama and Croat. As she approaches the dock’s fire, Maggie finds Hershel watching her from a distance, having followed her there out of worry for her safety. He urged her to leave, fearing for her life. If the Croat is aware they are coming, their chances of survival are slim. Before making a decision, both Maggie and Hershel are captured by soldiers. Trying to find a compromise, Perlie suggests they depart immediately since the Croat is now informed of their presence.
The Croat observes Negan’s gloomy expression as they prepare for the grand event that the New Babylon will witness later on. To cheer up such a man with a large ego, it’s best to flatter that ego by sharing an impressive story from his past. In this case, the story revolves around how Negan once prepared a massive feast during the Sanctuary days, with walker guts as the main course. However, the Croat wonders if Negan is not keen on revisiting those old days. Later in the evening, the ferry is fully equipped and ready with soldiers aboard. Maggie and Hershel are detained in a lower bunker due to insubordination. Yet, the Croat is unable to contact Perlie to change course.
Without a doubt, the attack comes sooner than anticipated. Negan, the Croat, and Burazi detonate bombs on the ferry. The water becomes a dangerous battlefield. Amidst the confusion, Ginny manages to rescue Maggie and Hershel just in time. Unfortunately, another bomb hits the deck of the ferry, instantly killing Governor Byrd. In a unique tactic, the Burazi use walkers as explosives next. Indeed, an ingenious method of employing the deceased. However, before they strike again, they ensure Maggie, Hershel, and Ginny are safe. Yet, Victor and the Croat spot his hesitation.
One Battle Is Done, but the War Isn’t Over
A Hostage and an Innocent Person’s Death Signal More Havoc Ahead
After the skirmish, both sides reorganize their forces. However, one might question if it truly was a battle, given one group was unable to retaliate. Historian Benjamin Pierce from New Babylon finds himself in captivity under the Dama, an influential figure known for her appreciation of art and history. For now, she intends to keep him alive, as she has other pressing concerns. She’s particularly interested in discovering why Negan chose to spare someone on the battlefield. As expected, Victor arrives at the scene. He didn’t betray Negan, but the Dama wants him to do so. As a farewell gesture, she asks Victor to play his violin. Unaware of the outcome, Negan only reveals part of the truth: he had delayed an execution that, in his opinion, was undeserved. Yet, he fails to mention who the intended victim was.
The confession isn’t sufficient; it won’t change the past like Bach did. Instead, the Dama is determined to progress towards the future. She executes Victor as a warning for disobedience. The events that unfolded are the price he paid for not adhering to instructions. In a city alleyway, Hershel and Maggie reconcile following all that transpired, but this may not mark the end they anticipated. Ginny, standing at a distance, seems slightly envious, her gaze fixed on a concealed weapon in her pack. The group regroups and marches headlong into an overgrown Central Park, with the Big Apple lying ahead.

The confession is insufficient; it doesn’t bring about change like Bach did. Instead, the Dama intends to advance, not return to the past. She takes Victor’s life as a warning for disobedience. His fate was the result of his failure to comply with orders. In an alley in the city, Hershel and Maggie patch things up after everything that had taken place, but this might not be the conclusion they had foreseen. Ginny watches from afar, her eyes betraying a hint of envy, while she glances at a gun stashed within her backpack. The group reassembles and presses forward into an overgrown Central Park, where the Big Apple lies ahead.)
