A brand new television series titled “The Paper” is set to debut on Peacock in September, as revealed at NBCUniversal’s Upfront presentation in New York City on May 12th. This series takes place within the same universe as “The Office“, and will adopt a similar mockumentary style. Unlike the original series that focused on employees of Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, this new show centers around “The Truth Teller“, a struggling Midwestern newspaper that an ambitious publisher is attempting to revive.

The show’s cast will include Domhnall Gleeson taking on the publisher role, alongside Sabrina Impacciatore, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, and Tim Key. Notably, Office actor Oscar Nuñez will reappear in his character of Oscar Martinez from the original series.

In the original Office series, the camera crew conducting documentary-style interviews wasn’t introduced until the last season. However, in The Paper, we will focus on the crew as they hunt for their next subject, which is the Toledo-based newspaper.

In addition to the main cast, notable guest appearances have been confirmed. These include Eric Rahill, Duane Shepard Sr., Allan Havey, Nate Jackson, Mo Welch, Nancy Lenehan, Molly Ephraim, and Tracy Letts.

During the event at Radio City Music Hall, Nuñez mentioned that he discussed his character’s upcoming journey with co-creator Greg Daniels, who was also in charge of “The Office”. This conversation took place before the show’s official announcement. He expressed his expectation for Oscar to transition into a more urban setting, humorously adding, “Greg took my suggestion and transferred Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton.

He continued, “So, it’s nice to be heard.”

Daniel provided further insights about the upcoming series, stating that it would once again be set in an unusual workplace environment, but this time in a new industry.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published May 12, he discussed the film centered around a Midwestern newspaper significantly diminished from its past grandeur. Many of the plotlines revolve around the character played by Domhnall Gleeson attempting to revive this paper, but due to financial constraints, he can’t hire reporters. Instead, he relies on the untrained and inexperienced staff who work there for free to report the news.

He stated, “This idea has great potential. There’s a rich background associated with community newspapers. The antagonist in this scenario is the internet, allowing people to access news from everyone for free, which results in advertising revenues flowing to Google.

Daniels also teased what the series will entail.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on May 12, he discussed the movie centered around a struggling Midwestern newspaper, now far from its past grandeur. Many plotlines revolve around Domhnall Gleeson’s character attempting to revive this paper. However, due to budget constraints, he can’t hire reporters and instead relies on untrained staff who work there voluntarily as makeshift reporters. They have little experience and are unsure of their roles.

I expressed, “What a promising foundation! Local newspapers have an impressive legacy. The antagonist in this scenario seems to be the internet, with its easy access to everyone’s news at no cost, leading to ad revenues being funneled towards Google.
