As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, I firmly believe that each Star Wars trilogy should have its own unique romantic storyline. The Original Trilogy introduced the compelling connection between Han Solo and Leia Organa (let’s keep our imaginations going as if the Leia-Luke kiss never occurred), while the Prequel Trilogy showcased Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala’s love story. The Sequel Trilogy hinted at a potential romance between Rey and Kylo Ren, but it wasn’t fully realized until the end of “The Rise of Skywalker,” much to the delight of Reylo fans. However, John Boyega, who plays Finn, has made it clear that he’s not on board with this romantic pairing. His reasons for disliking ‘Finn-Kylo’ are quite compelling and insightful.
During a chat with Josh Horowitz from Happy Sad Confused at C2E2, I was asked an intriguing question about Finn and Poe Dameron’s reaction to Rey and Ben Solo’s potential relationship, had the latter survived. When addressing this hypothetical scenario, John Boyega, who plays Finn, shared his thoughts:
To clarify, let me rephrase: In no way should romantic pursuit involve attempts on your life. If he’s pursuing you, the idea of him trying to kill you is absolutely not part of the romance. When he suggests becoming something powerful together, I wouldn’t recommend such a scenario to my own sisters.
In essence, what you’re saying is that it’s not an unreasonable concern for Boyega, given the complex history between Rey and Kylo Ren. Over the course of their encounters in “The Force Awakens,” “The Last Jedi,” and “The Rise of Skywalker,” they were often at odds, with Kylo initially kidnapping and mentally tormenting Rey, dueling with her, and inflicting a scar on his eye during their battles. The relationship between them became intricate as they both attempted to persuade each other to join their respective sides. Given the majority of their time together was marked by conflict, it’s understandable that Boyega would feel hesitant about any romantic development between them.

In the movie “The Rise of Skywalker,” Ben Solo abandoned his Kylo Ren persona and hurried off to Exegol to aid Rey in battling Palpatine and the Sith Eternal. This validated Rey’s belief that there was still goodness within him, a notion that John Boyega endorsed in his subsequent comment. Despite this, he believes Finn would have attempted to interrupt their romantic moment if he had been present with them on Exegol.
In simpler terms, the aspect of Star Wars that touches on its spiritual side is how she acknowledged the goodness and stood up for it. If I were Finn in that situation, I might imagine Finn saying something like, “Lady, let him go. Let’s escape together instead.
In a dramatic turn of events, Rey perished following her return of Palpatine’s Force lightning to end his life permanently. However, Ben Solo, in an act of self-sacrifice, employed the Force to resuscitate her. Unfortunately, their romantic connection as characters didn’t last long, and if John Boyega had his preference, it would have been different. It’s understandable that he might feel this way, though many Star Wars enthusiasts share a differing viewpoint – they believe Rey and Finn could have made an interesting pair instead.
Enjoy the flexibility of your Disney+ account to rewatch ‘The Rise of Skywalker’ or any other ‘Star Wars’ films at your convenience. Alternatively, prepare for the return of the galaxy far, far away on the big screen as ‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ premieres on May 22, 2026.
