Fans of Marvel’s Thunderbolts who were curious about the fate of a beloved guinea pig character can now breathe a sigh of relief. Director Jake Schreier, in an interview with Collider, has confirmed that the guinea pig survived, despite not being seen after the initial sequence due to a scrapped post-credits scene. This scene would have shown the tough rodent surviving amidst the film’s climactic chaos. The guinea pig was saved by Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh) early in the movie from a lab destined for destruction, and its sudden absence after the opening had many viewers puzzled about its whereabouts. Schreier’s remarks have shed light on this mystery and offered insights into the creative team’s initial plans for ending the Marvel Studios ensemble film. These plans were later altered by the Russo Brothers who added a post-credits scene linking Thunderbolts to Avengers: Doomsday.
I was working on an entirely different opening sequence,” I shared, “a little critter venturing through various Void rooms, which is a question that’s often asked about the guinea pig. Unfortunately, we didn’t end up using this concept, but it provides a lighthearted contrast to the mind-bending, universe-expanding teaser that made its way into the final cut, sending our furry friend on a perilous journey through the warped dimensions created by the Void entity.
Instead of adding more screen time for guinea pigs, the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts takes a sharp turn towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and filmed on the set of Doomsday itself, this tag occurs around 14 months after the main film’s events. Inside the Watchtower (formerly the Avengers Tower), the newly titled New Avengers have a discussion about their ongoing disagreements with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), who is also putting together his own team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Their conversation is cut short by an alert indicating an “extra-dimensional ship” entering Earth’s atmosphere, which is later revealed to be the vessel of the Fantastic Four, complete with its famous logo. This scene sets up both The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the significant multiversal conflict anticipated in Avengers: Doomsday.
Thunderbolts* Strikes Gold with Critics and Audiences
The movie “Thunderbolts” garnered a robust critical response, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it an impressive 88% “Certified Fresh” rating. Even more positive are the audience reactions, as shown by a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid “A-” CinemaScore. This level of acclaim is a significant achievement for Marvel Studios, especially considering that the story revolves around a team primarily made up of characters who previously appeared in secondary roles.
Word-of-mouth praise for “Thunderbolts” seems to be generating tangible financial benefits. In its initial domestic run, it raked in $74 million during the opening weekend and an additional $33 million the following week. This means that its earnings decreased by approximately 55% – a much smaller drop compared to the 68% decline seen by “Captain America: Brave New World”. Although its current global box office of $272 million is not yet enough for profit, the sustained interest in “Thunderbolts” could potentially make it a successful venture.
