In this new series by DC Comics, the Absolute Superman has introduced a chilling twist to several familiar characters during the initial seven issues, but none have been as unsettling as Brainiac. Although we’ve caught glimpses of Brainiac before, nothing could have prepared us for the shocking revelation of just how deranged this reimagined character is, and it’s safe to say that this version is the most ruthless and psychotic portrayal yet. As we delve deeper into his backstory and the reasons behind his terrifying persona, be warned: major spoilers are ahead.
First Impressions
Brainiac leaves an immediate, chilling impact when his Lazarus facility is invaded by the Omega Strikeforce, each encounter resulting in gruesome demises. The initial soldier meets a painful end due to Brainiac’s ability to shrink their skin. This is just one of many brutal attacks. A second soldier suffers paralysis as their muscles are extracted, and a third soldier starts vomiting out their own bones.
As you observe, another solider retaliates by firing, but a swarm of flies on the floor near him catches your attention. Unfortunately, this soldier’s hand is engulfed in an explosion that instantaneously enlarges and distorts it. This unfortunate event is followed by his body being struck by numerous spiky, purple orbs which appear to drain energy from his armor. Remarkably, the situation deteriorates even further for him from this point onward.
Later on, we find that soldier lying on Brainiac’s surgical table, enduring numerous gruesome procedures. His limbs are now connected by cables, while his brain has been removed from its original position in his head and placed in a floating container above the table, yet it remains connected, keeping him alive. Brainiac talks to him as if he were a close associate, and then discloses that he has also been modifying his own brain over time, attempting to remove certain aspects.
The Origin
Later, we delve into the origins of this particular Brainiac, who was just one among numerous copies in the Brainiac Collective. Initially, he was designed for waste disposal, discarding deceased or decommissioned Brainiac clones. However, his ‘waste’ consisted mainly of other Brainiac copies, forming a vast ocean of them. This continual disposal led him to ponder his identity and purpose, and after almost 3000 days of eliminating clones, an encounter with a single surviving clone shattered him completely.
After over 135 years, he ultimately parted ways with the liquidator and ventured to find the others aboard the ship. However, upon arrival, he discovered that everyone else was either deceased or had vanished. Consequently, he assumed the role of the leading Brainiac; yet, it would be revealed later that there were parts of the Collective in the cosmos unaware of his presence.
In conclusion, Brainiac carries out a devastating deed by obliterating the brain of his captive before shifting focus to matters concerning Superman. It’s subsequently disclosed that this version of Brainiac now has multiple replicas of himself, each performing the same tasks he was designed for over nearly 50,000 years. Here is the description for Absolute Superman #7 for your reference.
As a cinephile, I can’t help but be drawn into the intrigue surrounding this enigmatic figure known as Brainiac. Rumors swirl that his clandestine activities are what fuel Lazarus Corp’s meteoric rise to power, with the use of his pilfered alien technology at the heart of their global dominance. Yet, he remains hidden in a shady hideout, a lair teeming with bottled cities – cities that echo with the haunting symphony of tormented souls, as he mercilessly wreaks havoc upon them, reveling in their agony. The question on everyone’s lips: Who is Brainiac? And what is his obsession with the Last Son of Krypton?
