Eurovision 2025: Malta’s Song Title Change Sparks Controversy

Malta’s original Eurovision 2025 song won’t be seeing you next Tuesday.

In fact, during the second semifinal of the European music contest on May 15, Miriana Conte’s performance won’t be known as “Serving” but rather by another name.

Originally approved by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) for this year’s Eurovision, the singer’s song titled “Kant,” meaning “singing” in Maltese, was later disapproved in March because its title sounded too much like a crude slang term in English for a part of female anatomy.

Recently, we found out that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) won’t be incorporating the Maltese term ‘Kant’ in our Eurovision Song Contest entry, as stated by Conte in a March Facebook post. Despite being surprised and disheartened, given the tight deadline to submit the song, I assure you that the performance will not falter – the show must go on, and ‘Diva’ certainly won’t be letting us down.

The chorus of the original lyrics, primarily in English with the exception of one Maltese word meaning “singing,” refers back to a commonly used term in the queer community, symbolizing strength and fierceness.

Since the Eurovision Song Contest, organized by the EBU, has regulations known as Duty of Care rules that prohibit acts with “Inappropriate content, gestures, messages, elements or behaviors suitable for an international prime time television program aimed at audiences of all ages, Conte was compelled to modify his track in order to maintain its eligibility.

In addition to updating the song’s title to “Serving,” the chorus now says, “Serving (ah).”

As a lifestyle expert, I can share my personal insights from navigating unexpected changes, like the last-minute alteration that recently disrupted the Maltese singer’s plans. Reflecting upon this roller coaster ride, I realized the immense pressure and anxiety that such updates can bring.

In a March interview on TikTok, Conte admitted that he felt let down. He couldn’t pretend otherwise because the word ‘kant’ in our context refers to singing. He had hoped the remake would lose its charm, but surprisingly, with such a massive fanbase and dedicated supporters, even the revised version resonates with them, as they continue to hum along to it.

As a composed individual, of course, I felt a pang of disappointment, but soon enough, I moved past it while brainstorming possible solutions. I must admit, I relish a good challenge.
