In the latest trailer for ‘Superman’, there’s a subtle homage to renowned comic book writer Mark Waid. At approximately 46 seconds into the video, we see Superman being led away with his hands cuffed behind his back, and above him is a sign that reads “Waid Street”. It’s not specified where this street is located in the scene, but Mark Waid is well-known for his DC Comics work, particularly on some classic Superman stories. Though Waid himself hasn’t spoken about this Easter egg yet, fans have already started discussing it online.
On Wednesday, a fresh trailer for the upcoming movie titled “Superman” was released. It depicts Superman in captivity, but the reasons behind this are unclear. In the clip, Superman can be seen walking along Waid Street with his hands tied, escorted by Rick Flag (played by Frank Grillo) and Angela Spica, known as The Engineer (portrayed by María Gabriela de Faría). Ultraman appears to be closely guarding him. They’re making their way towards a large public building, but just before they arrive, The Engineer is seen forcefully slamming Superman’s face onto the pavement.
In Metropolis, where a made-up city street seems ideal, these events may unfold. They might be making their way to LuthorCorp’s office or lab, or perhaps a business belonging to Maxwell Lord. Alternatively, it could be a courthouse or television studio, as the antagonists appear determined to undermine Superman’s positive public image.
Regardless of the situation, naming a street after Waid is an appropriate tribute to his significant impact on DC Comics history. In the realm of Superman, Waid first gained notoriety through the graphic novel titled “Kingdom Come”, published in 1996. This work delved into the future of the DC universe and the role of its major heroes within it. Later, he was acknowledged for revitalizing interest in the Justice League, and in 2003, Waid embarked on a personal Superman project with the limited series titled “Superman: Birthright”.
Easter eggs such as these are quite frequent in comic book adaptations and serve as a delightful nod to where these tales originated, paying tribute to their creators. Unlike certain other comic book writers, Waid has never been involved in Hollywood projects as a writer, producer, or consultant, although it’s unclear if this is by preference or circumstance. The upcoming film “Superman” premieres on July 11th, marking the commencement of the DC Universe’s live-action narrative in earnest.
