The freshly unveiled trailer for the new “Superman” is bursting with both action and stardom, making it simple to overlook a few hidden gems – even a dozen or so. On Wednesday, DC Studios revealed the official first teaser for the James Gunn-led remake, providing glimpses of David Corenswet’s Steel Man, Rachel Brosnahan’s fearless Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s villainous Lex Luthor.
During its three-minute duration, the latest trailer showcases brief appearances of the Justice Gang – a threesome of superheroes backed by corporations, consisting of Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion). Additionally, Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan) is hinted at as a secretive character. However, there’s also an understated cameo that might go unnoticed.
At the workspace of The Daily Planet, where Clark Kent socializes with Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), a computer screen displays what looks like an image of J’onn J’onnz, also known as the Martian Manhunter. Similar to Superman, the Green Martian hails from Mars and chose Earth as his new home following a catastrophic plague that destroyed his entire Martian race, including his wife and daughter.
First appearing in Detective Comics #225 under the alias “Manhunter from Mars” (originally John Jones), this extraterrestrial character was transported to Earth by Professor Mark Erdel. Using his ability to change shape like a chameleon, he adopted a human form. Stranded on our planet, J’onn J’onnz assumed an Earthman’s identity, took the name “John Jones,” and began working as a crime-fighting detective.
In the comic book series “The Brave and the Bold” #28 from the ’60s, J’onn J’onzz joined Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash (Barry Allen), and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) to form the initial lineup of what would later be known as “The Big Seven.” Their first mission was to combat Starro, a starfish-like alien with conquest ambitions who is also a villain from Gunn’s “Suicide Squad.”
In the 1960s issue #28 of the series “The Brave and the Bold,” J’onn J’onzz was among the founding members of a group that would eventually be called “The Big Seven” alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash (Barry Allen), and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan). Their first joint operation saw them taking on Starro, an antagonist who resembles a starfish and is known for his conquest plans, as depicted in Gunn’s “Suicide Squad.
In recent iterations, I found myself joining forces with Martian Manhunter, or J’onn J’onnz, under Maxwell Lord’s banner as part of the Justice League International, alongside Green Lantern, Guy Gardner. During the 2011 New 52 reboot, I served alongside Angela Spica, also known as the Engineer, in a covert police unit called Stormwatch. Interestingly, she is another character you might recognize from the world of Superman, portrayed by María Gabriela de Faría.
It appears that Gunn subtly suggested the Martian Manhunter a year ago by posting a picture of Chocos cookies, which are known to be J’onn J’onzz’s preferred snack in comic books. Interestingly, Chocos ads can be found in Superman comics, and the Chocos office is located on a floor of the LordTech building that gets attacked by the Hammer of Boravia. (The trailer shows an armored terrorist assaulting LordTech, one of Metropolis’ significant corporations alongside Stagg Industries and LuthorCorp.)
DC Studios’ “Superman” movie, featuring actors like David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Frank Grillo, will premiere exclusively in cinemas on the 11th of July.
