Verdict on Fear Below

Recap

The film centers around a band of divers tasked with assisting a criminal in recovering his hidden treasure. As they journey through a muddy waterway inhabited by a fierce bull shark, it turns its predatory gaze upon them. Despite this, the gangster insists on not allowing them to escape without first retrieving his valuables.

Best Parts

One striking aspect of this film is its captivating setting in the 1940s. Unlike modern films, it lacks advanced technology or assistance for diving and instead showcases antiquated diving gear. This creates unique obstacles for the characters as they face off against the shark while trying to gather treasure. The distinctive underwater environment propels the narrative forward, leaving you eager for more. Moreover, rather than dwelling on graphic shark attacks, the film emphasizes suspense and the intrigue of the old-fashioned diving equipment. Lastly, the acting is commendable, breathing life into a variety of 1940s characters.

Worst Parts

In the shark-focused part of the film, there’s a noticeable shift that’s impressive. But unfortunately, outdated stereotypes about women and African American characters during diving scenes are uncomfortable to observe.

Final ThoughtsFear Below is a fantastic spin on the shark attack movie.
