John Boyega Criticizes Star Wars Finale: Rey Should’ve Chosen Finn Instead of Kylo

Enthusiasts, or individuals who primarily enjoy movies for the development of their favorite romantic pairings, had an exhilarating experience with the sequel trilogy. In The Force Awakens, it appeared that the narrative was steering towards a conclusion involving Daisy Ridley’s Rey and John Boyega’s Finn forming a relationship. However, this did not transpire. Instead, an unexpected dynamic unfolded between Rey and Kylo Ren, portrayed by Adam Driver – a character who subjected her to threats and torment.

John Boyega has been quite vocal about his disapproval regarding the direction taken by the Star Wars sequel trilogy. During a podcast conversation, when a fan inquired if he and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) would have endorsed the romantic connection between Rey and Kylo, he simply said “No.” This humorous response seemed to convey a more serious underlying message as well.

In other words, let me make this clear to everyone here, especially straight women in the audience, romantic pursuits should never involve someone trying to harm you. It’s not part of the romance,” Boyega stated. “I wouldn’t advise my sisters or anyone else to enter into such a situation, even if it could lead to something powerful.

Fortunately for Finn, although Kylo Ren (who was actually Ben Solo at that moment) was involved, Boyega acknowledged that there were tender aspects to the scene. As he put it, “It mirrors the spiritual aspect of Star Wars, the fact that [Rey] recognized the good and fought for it.” However, it appears he believes the almost-romance was an error in judgment. Jokingly, he suggested, “If I were Finn there, Finn should have had a line where he says, ‘Girl, step away from him. Come home with me‘.

John Boyega Didn’t Like The Direction Star Wars Went With Finn

Previously, Boyega has expressed his concerns about Disney. Initially, Finn’s storyline was engaging, but by the end of The Rise of Skywalker, he didn’t have much screen time. In a 2020 interview, he shared his feelings about this situation.

Back then, he expressed his disapproval of Disney by saying, ‘Don’t introduce significant Black characters only to later marginalize them in the franchise. That’s not right.’ He further pointed out other non-white characters he felt were underutilized and added, ‘They gave all the depth and complexity to Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley. It’s no secret that they both understand this. In fact, everyone knows it. I’m simply stating the obvious.’

It appears there is no apparent tension between Boyega and Ridley, who shared a strong bond during the filming of the Star Wars movies. In an interview with Happy Sad Confused, Boyega expressed his anticipation for Daisy Ridley’s upcoming project, stating, “I’m really looking forward to seeing her excel in a franchise that she can truly call her own as a fully-qualified Jedi. I can hardly wait to see it. I’m genuinely thrilled for her.
