Gundam: The Witch From Mercury Spinoff Hypes Release Date With New Look at Returning Characters

A beloved Gundam series is receiving a spin-off focusing on high-school romance, titled “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Frontier of Youth“. This new story takes place in an ordinary Earth setting within the near future. The cast from the popular anime “The Witch from Mercury” will be returning, including characters such as Suletta Mercury, Miorine Rembran, Guel Jeturk, Shaddiq Zenelli, and a variant of Elan Ceres. Bandai and Sunrise are collaborating on this manga spin-off, with Comic Newtype handling the publication. Previously, they had shared character profiles for Setsuna and Miorine, and now they have revealed redesigns for Guel, Elan, and Shaddiq. In the original anime, the story was set in a space-based military school where students were permitted to engage in mobile suit duels under the school’s supervision.

Following her unexpected betrothal to Miorine, daughter of a prominent space tycoon, Suletta found herself obliged to outperform fellow students in mecha battles, as a means to maintain the engagement. Guel, Shaddiq, and Elan were among the competitors vying for Miorine’s hand, creating a fierce competition for Suletta. In Frontier of Youth, the story unfolds in an ordinary high school setting of near-future Japan. The premiere of the first chapter of Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Frontier of Youth is set for May 23rd, and will be featured in the Comic Newtype magazine.

The Background Info for Guel Jeturk, Shaddiq Zenelli, and Elan Ceres

In the animated series “Frontier of Youth,” mobile suits and Gundams continue to be a part of the story, but instead of attending a rigorous military academy like in the initial show, the characters now belong to an ordinary school. The character Guel, who stands out with his light pink hair, takes on a secondary protagonist role. He develops feelings for Suletta and assists both main female characters leading up to the final episode. Shaddiq, known for his dark complexion and long blonde locks, is portrayed as a schemer and secondary antagonist, aiming to capitalize on the ongoing events. Elan’s storyline in the original anime is more intricate and complex.

In the anime “The Witch from Mercury,” there were two distinct teenage characters named Elan. Each had been genetically altered to appear identical and infiltrate the academy as heirs of a company. The original Elan was removed after failing against Suletta, followed by the second Elan who tried to charm Suletta but later fled before ultimately joining the main cast for the final battle. However, it remains unclear which incarnation of Elan is present in “Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Frontier of Youth.” While the first Elan was quiet and reserved, the second Elan displayed more strategic thinking and flirtatious behavior.

Japanese author Hisadake, who worked as a Setting Assistant for the anime series “The Witch from Mercury,” is the writer behind the book titled “Frontier of Youth“. Illustrator Hiro Hato, renowned for their work on “Misumi-san wa Misukasenai” and “Inu to Yuusha wa Kazaranai”, will be providing the artwork for “Frontier of Youth“. Hato, a fan of the original anime, is excited to contribute to this spin-off. The anime “The Witch from Mercury” has several spin-offs, including a side-story manga co-written by Hisadake called “Vanadis Heart“, which delves into another aspect of the well-known Vanadis incident depicted in the anime. A spin-off novel titled “Cradle Planet” was penned by Ichiro Okouchi and published in Fall 2022. Additionally, a light novel adaptation is being released based on the original “The Witch from Mercury” series.
