Doctor Who Celebrates 20 Years with Special Unleashed Episode Featuring Past Stars

60 years ago, Doctor Who made its debut, and this year we’re commemorating 15 years since its revival in 2005. In recognition of this milestone, the BBC plans to air a unique episode called “Doctor Who: Unleashed.

In this upcoming special edition, once more led by Steffan Powell, we’ll unveil hidden truths about the production process, featuring insights from crew members responsible for various episodes over time, along with appearances by some of the show’s most iconic personalities.

The upcoming episode will star Ncuti Gatwa, who is currently the Doctor, alongside former Doctors David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor) and Jodie Whittaker (the Thirteenth Doctor).

Representing various time periods, showrunners such as Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat, and Chris Chibnall will be included, along with numerous actors who portrayed companions throughout the series.

Belinda Chandra (who played Varada Sethu), Rose Tyler (performed by Billie Piper), Bill Potts (portrayed by Pearl Mackie), and Yasmin Khan (acted by Mandip Gill) will each share their perspectives on the impact of Doctor Who in interviews, engaging in conversations about the show.

In an exciting announcement about the special episode, Russell T Davies shared: “Following the season’s thrilling conclusion, it’s fantastic to commemorate the 20 years that have brought us to this point. I’m looking forward to creating a grand celebration for long-time fans, featuring an array of stars, Doctors, companions, Billie Piper and David Tennant reuniting, as well as the creation of our very first Dalek!

In the process, Powell noted: “It’s such a delight to be part of unleashing two decades of Doctor Who history. Witnessing the enduring influence this program has had on those who contributed to its enchantment is an honor. It serves as a testament to the profound impact the show holds for so many people.

The specific date for the upcoming episode hasn’t been set yet, but here’s what we do know: It will broadcast on BBC Three, BBC iPlayer, and BBC Wales in June. This airing will occur following the finale of the current season.

Since the year 2023, Doctor Who: Unleashed has been broadcast as a supplementary program providing insights into the series. Earlier, from 2005 to 2011, another series called Doctor Who: Confidential served in this capacity.

On Saturday, 24th May, Doctor Who resumes its journey. In the UK, you can catch the latest episodes starting from 8am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer, with rebroadcasts on BBC One later in the day. If you’re not in the UK, you can find the series on Disney+.
